Intel to Finally Retake Performance Crown ?

Best to take this early benchmark with a pinch of salt but -

...AMD still does have some time to surprise us with AM2, but from what we've seen today, they are going to have to do a lot of work to close this gap. We saw performance today in the two areas that we were most concerned about with Conroe: gaming and media encoding, and in both Intel greatly exceeded our expectations. Also remember that Conroe should be lower power than the AMD offering we compared it to, although we weren't able to measure power consumption at the wall in our brief time with the systems.

Going into IDF we expected to see a good showing from Conroe, but leaving IDF, well, now we just can't wait to have it. ...

Maybe this will produce lower AMD prices as well. :)
Now that looks really interesting, but I'd say it's good news. AMD's X2 CPU's are good, but dual-core has not yet provided any increase in gaming performance, with single-core 3800 running games roughly parallel to a 44/4800.

I'm not sure if AMD's AM2 has enough difference to fix this, but it looks like Intel could dominate gaming systems again unless they come up with something fast. I’m starting to get tired of AMD brining out new socket designs (754, 940, 939 etc.) every year too, thus forcing upgrades far too frequently.
remember you're looking at a chip that isnt even going to be available on the market for at least six months, which probably means more like 8 or 9 and comparing it with a chip that you can go down the shops and buy today. I wouldnt expect AMD to take this laying down. Its also an engineering sample, so it isnt even guaranteed to give those results when it is released.

In January an Intel rep admited it would take a long time to regain an advantage over AMD, by the time this hits the shelves; and always assumimg it is any good; AMD will have advanced beyond it again. Remember any manufactuere will try to show their new product in the best possible light. It want that long ago that Intel were caught adding special intructions to make their chips perform better using the benchmark programs.
