Intermittent connection issue

Simple idea...well it worked for me. I had Norton installed. This for some reason stopped everything and it took me ages to work out that it was Norton causing the problem. I stopped it running and everything worked fine. So then I just reinstalled it and everything was fine. May be worth a try and if you haven't got Norton then stop your Anti-Virus etc and see what happens.

I think I have 2 seperate issues, one is a known problem with my line, BT will NOT fix it, and even if they can be forced to come out and fix it, they WILL NOT take the actions required to stop the line and junction box being damaged again.
The other (possible) problem is my router overheating and shutting down/ locking up, the wireless to ADSL interface.

I have created some extra airflow through the box using some HiFi spikes and an aol CPU fan, so lets see what happens.

Have you tried setting the pc on the network as a static IP I had to on my pc to stop webpages hanging.

Still think the 0 on down power needs sorting.

Hi guys,

I didn't think it was anything to do with settings on a PC because I have multiple machines in the house, all running different setups - some with a fixed IP on the LAN, some dynamic.

It looks like I was correct about this, as after a lot of debating and deliberating, Martin at Aquiss managed to spot something very odd about my connection while the fault was occurring: when pinging my connection, the response was coming back from a different IP address!

I'll mention now that I have a static IP address with Aquiss... and a lot of digging from Martin finally revealed that someone else had entered my IP address in the setup for their router, so they were unwittingly (one assumes) hijacking my address!

Martin has now taken care of this for me and I have the address to myself again. Having done a few tests, I'm happy to report that my connection now seems to be coming back up first time every time (touch wood)!! :D

Thanks so much to all of you, and especially Martin at Aquiss, who was good enough to stick with me on this one and eventually track down the reason for this happening, which let's face it, was highly improbable and definitely wouldn't be the first thing you'd think of. It reminds me why I'm still with Aquiss: they provide a quality service and have a genuine desire to help their customers.

Tom

Glad everything is working out, and well done Martin @ Aquiss!!!

I'm surprised one customer can use another's IP address - I hope they have some measures in place to ensure the right person gets the copyright infringment notice if someone hijacks another customer's IP address while bittorenting, etc.

Spoofing an IP address is a common way for big league pirates to disguise who they are.

Spoofing an IP address is a common way for big league pirates to disguise who they are.

What can be done with IP address spoofing is usually limited by the fact that the replies will be sent to the spoofed IP address and therefore not received by the spoofer - eg TCP doesn't lend itself to spoofing, because you wouldn't receive the syn ack handshake, so you'd have to guess the sequence number. UDP doesn't need handshakes, but if someone trying to identify a pirate sends a request for a packet of data to an IP address, and receives a response with the requested packet and it matches a part of their copyright file, then that does rather implicate the recorded user of the IP address in sharing the file.

So????? (waits for something he didn't know/something relevant to the original question) :-p
