Intermittent Internet Landline Connection

[Computer Says No]

The internet connection drops in my home every week or so. I have contacted talktalk about this, they test the line and state that there is no problem with the internet connection. Can I just ask if I change ISP, to another company- would that change the situation at all? I am unsure as BT Open Reach maintain the lines. I have a router directly plugged in the phone socket- no microfilter. I am reliant on the internet as I work from home, and need a reliable connection.

You will need to clarify how you are concluding that it is the broadband that is down.
Are you using the router lights or its status via the web interface?
If it is a device losing Internet is it a single device or many?
How are your devices connected (wired or WIFI)?
How are you resolving it?. Does it come back on its own or are you rebooting the router?

Unless you are on talk talks alternative FTTP network (it sounds like you are not) it will be part of the Openreach network so it would be them who maintain the lines etc.

If you can 100% rule out any issues in the home I would say the cause of the drops is likely in the network fairly close to your home so switching ISP mot likely would not resolve the problem.

Intermittent faults are a pain as it can be pretty hard for the ISP to pick them up.

When you say it drops every week is it only happening once a week? Up to about 3 drops a day is considered normal by a lot of ISP's on a copper/FTTC network. Granted they are normally so quick you would not notice it.

I recommend everything Meatball suggests though, I know from experience its the best place to start and solves the issue more often than you would think.

If you were to switch to Andrews and Arnold they include line monitoring as part of their service. They're not cheap, but they would have the good hard data evidence of the fault if it is persisting and would do a good job of making OpenReach fix it.

Where did you see them say that? 3 drops a day is not normal, it should not be happening. I'd expect DLM to start seeing that as a line stability problem, and it will then reduce line speeds until it finds a more stable level.

To the original poster - we need a bit more detail, and what Meatball suggests is a good place to start. But if you could also tell us what package you have and paste the connection stats from your router (attenuation, profile speed, noise margin etc.) than that would also help.

Correction it was not every day lol, think it was over a period of 5-7 days. My bad!
