Internal ADSL PCI Modems

Can anyone shed some light for me or share some reviews on what is good and what is not?

Currently I am using Thomson Speedtouch 330 fro Bulldog ADSL 8megs services and been expericeing som random dc's, was told to dump the ST330 and go for a router.

My problem is being unemployed I cant afford 70 80 or 90 quids router so likes an more cheaper option of an Internal ADSL PCI Modems as I've has seen one at PC WOrld for around 25 quids and would like to know has anyone got one installed and what are they really like?

Thanks.

Make sure you are using the high speed drivers http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/330.asp

If you want a router try ebuyer and amazon

I'm certainly not recommending it, but you can get a cheapo router like this safecom 4 port router for about £25 inc delivery http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90976 (I'm not sure how reliable safecom routers are though)

Don't trust the reviews on ebuyer though, get some feedback from here or somewhere else.

This site which resells returned hardware might be worth a look too http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/index.asp?idprodtype=2. (never used them myself)

if he is getting 7+Mb (mentioned on other thread) then then he already has the high speed drivers

Agreed

he should get a stable 8Mb with that, but, just in case he wants to upgrade to doublespeed (ADSL2+) sometime in the future, its gonna cost him to replace it as that router IIRC is Ti AR7 based

Agreed, look for reviews on some hardware sites as well such as tomshardware and such..

nor me, may take a looksie myself :D

It might also be worth checking your local staples for the 3-com ADSL wireless router bundle , however I think this offer has been going for a while so they'll probably be sold out.

If wireless is not needed then, imho, there is no need to spend extra on it :)

True, but did you check the price :) £30 would not be a bad price for a reasonable brand adsl modem router without the extra wireless dongle & wireless card.

ebay have bt wirless router/modems fror around £20 very reliable acording to many reviews can be used wireless or wired plus with routers u get the advantage of built-in firewall.

the model is voyager 2091 used but i kknow the people selling and they are all 2 - 3 months old and have been unlocked to be used on any adsl isp.

look at the ebay shop jaminall for details

Have discovered the high speed drivers from speedtouch site last night and has installed it BUT still face those interrmittance random dc still as per normal.

Which is why I was considering internal pci asdl modem and be gone of ST330, as I have seen them around 25 pounds at PC World as opposed to 35 priced on the website.

But I will check the other URL given and can't do ebay at the moment due to lack of credit card unless bayer accepts paypal as payment then i'm ok etc. But will check it.

As fro the high speed drivers the advice came late as I read somewhere on the forums about this last night so before installing was on bulk and getting between 6.2 to 7.3-4 megs never seen it any higher. Installed it and still get the same avg conenction with the same random dc during the course of the night and now during the day so far no dc yet (although never and rarely sees a dc during the day!).

Thanks for all thw advice and if anyone knwos excatly what an internal pci adsl modem is like please drop an post and elt me know!

Thanks.

Thanks.

In the past I have tried to use a (admittedly elcheapo) PCI adsl modem and never found it particularly good, it was just incompatible with the motherboard I was using, and then failed to work properly when I tried it in my brother's PC (however a mate borrowed it off me and, well, aint seen it since, so it worked on his PC) So, in conclusion, if you buy a decent make, then the performance is supposed to be better than the USB modem (but with todays high power CPU's I guess it levels out).

I used to use a Fujitsu FX310 usb modem, an oldie but rock solid, currently on another mate's PC coping with ADSLmax admirably.

I have a BT Voyager 2100 modem/router/wireless which is very decent and stable. If you can affort a modem/router, go for it, they usually come with a firewall included.

Taking in what you said about PCI modems and then looking at the other URl given t me I might try go for an Netgear from dslreport site (thinks it was DSLreport) or do a search around for a decent router fro around 30 pounds or less.

Otherwise might take a chance on this PCI internal modem and see how it goes.

do you mean this one ZOOM 5506-72-00 ADSL PCI INTERNAL MODEM http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...ge=Product&sku=754309&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null

I think that might use the old conexant access runner chipset, not great on poor lines if it is. I've got an old safecom router based on the same (adsl1 only) chipset http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/48449/rb/22336805341 wouldn't be my first choice of router but it is better value than PC world.

Yes that the one i saw at pc world but not at that price the box was a different box and it was for 24.99. Hence me starting this threads if anyone has any experince of using an PCI adls modem to get an idea what it like before getting one.

By sounds of things everyone seems to edge out for routers or better usb modems such as ST547/8 cant remember the make. Or better still wireless routers and so on.

I merely wanting to get an internal card purely for short term till I get a job and got my debts sorted etc and then I can think about upgrading my PC seriously as it an mid-range to lower end PC spec! SO hence thinking of an PCI modem due to my old spec pc.

Pentium 3 1.2ghz with 122 fsb and pc2300 ram 512 meg ram, with 460 gig hard drive split over 2 physical drives partitioned into 3 drives and 1 external drive for backups. Has this pc for about 2 years now.

As times goes on and get more and more ideas from others it build an idea what I can aim for but those URL given on buying routers at cut price deals might be the way for me just needs to ask an friend if she an place an order for me and pay her for it. :)

Does anyone knwos of a recent PCI adsl modem review not the one i saw where it was reviewed back in year 2002 i thinks it was!

Thanks.

the jaminall site will take paypal and i believe paypal will take cheques. takes longer to clear but solves problem of credit card or use a friends card and pay them the cash.

Wow so many to choose from, just a quick question and advice, which is better? D-Link? Netgear? or Belkins?

Looking around and saw this http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=657 is this ideal for me to replace my ST330 for Bulldog ISP?
Or how about this one? http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=462630

Or does anyone knows of a better product I should go for?

Thanks, Peter

PS sorry for long delay lost net conenction for about 2 weeks due to unpaid bills!

For Bulldog's ADSL service I would get the Netgear DG834GT, Belkin7633(1001uk) (not pcworlds) or the Speedtouch 585(i)V6 in case you want to upgrade to Doublespeed later on, the DG834G V2 has problems with ADSL2+ from Bulldog so I wouldn't recommend it.

Which 1 to get? See which you can get the cheapest :D lol

Looked for them and ebuyer not doing them well netgear it does bu that is little out of my pocket at the moment, my max budget is between 20 to 30 but maxing out around 40 pounds.

I made another posting on another forums and somehow and it weird they are pointing to the same 2 pretty decent in someways in term of cost routers.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/48449/rb/22336805341
or
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90976/rb/22709101319

I am now leaning towards the Extra Value 5 Port ADSL / ADSL2/2+ Modem Router for the moment till I get a job and then get a decent router there after! As this router was partly recommended for my budget by several people and partly on other forums too. This is why my budget is low around 30 pounds as I am unemployed.

I've got the first one of those two a Safecom SAMR-4114 it uses the conexant accessrunner chipset. ADSL1 only (ebuyer probably supply the SAMR-4115 which is exactly the same router in a different case)

The second one - the Safecom GART2-4115 (GURU) as I recall uses the TI-ar7 chipset. My new Netgear DG834G uses a version of this chipset.

Unfortunately I don't have adslmax, but I suspect you will probably get better results with the second TI-ar7 based GURU one. Which of the two is the one I would choose. spec here:- http://safecom.cn/guru/product/adsl/gart2-4115.htm

You could check out www.routertech.org for advice which is an unofficial Safecom users forum.

You might also save a pound or two if you order it during ebuyer's "happy hour" - I think they both were discounted durring the last one I checked out (there wasn't anything else on offer of interest so I haven't checked since)
