Internet approaching its full capacity -

When you next ring your ISP to complain about unacceptable speeds, don't be too surprised if they blame the internet

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/102575/internet-approaching-its-full-capacity-deloitte.html

Internet bottlenecks, due to the due to lack of investment and growth in video traffic, will become noticeable this year, according to a new report by Deloitte
The report says that one of the key possibilities for 2007 is that the internet could be approaching its capacity.

'The twin trends causing this are an explosion in demand, largely fuelled by the growth in video traffic and the lack of investment in new, functioning capacity,' said Igal Brightman, global managing partner at Deloitte. 'Bottlenecks are likely to become apparent in some of the Internet's backbones, the terabit-capable pipes exchanging traffic between continents.'

He said that investment, either in laying new cable or lighting existing fiber, may be stifled by continuing falls in wholesale capacity prices.

Somebody comes up with a news item like that every year, but it never happens because international networks have a greater deal of independence and resilience now. Should the worst happen then links to the USA or other countries might slow or even temporarily break in some areas, yet so far most of the major exchanges have correctly balanced expenditure with growth. Guess we'll see what happens, but it won’t be an Internet apocalypse =).

Somebody posted at ADSLGuide that in South Korea they already apply throttling on some (all?) of their high speed residential links. If capacity starts to be a problem then I assume bandwidth costs will go up and more ISPs will introduce traffic management.

I would rather have a cap than have "shaping" Ive been through that before and i ended up leaving , i was not one of the heavy downloaders ,it hit everyone, remember Freedom2Surf?
I'm currently on a 30GB capped package with IDNet they only count the downloads, it suits my needs.
