Internet Explorer

Hi. I'm trying to fix some problems on my Uncle's PC, which runs Win 98SE and a Virgin-net dialup connection.

When I tried to apply some Microsoft patches to the Virgin-branded version of IE, they wouldn't work because the patches detected that IE didn't have SP1 installed. But the "About IE" info says it DOES have SP1 installed. For this and other reasons I wonder if it's possible to ditch the branded IE and replace it with a standard one. Has anyone done this, and were there any problems?

Would appreciate any advice.

Hi,

I know it is possible, look under the Internet Explorer folder in program files, and delete the folder called Custom which I think has the branding and to rename Internet Explorre you will need to find the Window Title string for Internet Explorer in the registry so it is possible, otherwise run the IE Repair Tool or uninstall it and take it back to an earlier version and then downlaod a fresh copy from Microsoft.

I am afraid this might be the only way of doing this, I can think of.

Thanks, jd. Will try that. But I may also try to persuade the PC owner that firebird would be a better option!
