Internet Sites Could Be Given Cinema-Style Ratings

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Andy Burnham says he believes that new standards of decency need to be applied to the web. He is planning to negotiate with Barack Obama’s incoming American administration to draw up new international rules for English language websites.

The Cabinet minister describes the internet as “quite a dangerous place” and says he wants internet-service providers (ISPs) to offer parents “child-safe” web services.

Giving film-style ratings to individual websites is one of the options being considered, he confirms. When asked directly whether age ratings could be introduced, Mr Burnham replies: “Yes, that would be an option. This is an area that is really now coming into full focus.”

ISPs, such as BT, Tiscali, AOL or Sky could also be forced to offer internet services where the only websites accessible are those deemed suitable for children.

I have to ask the question, does Andy Burnham wear mascara ?

Would be more appropriate to ask if he is missing something, all men have and footballers kick about football pitches.

1. Would you be happy paying BT the same as any other customer just to receive children acceptable websites?
2. Why do the ISPs, Router makers, Software writers all write parental control interface's if parents are either too ignorant to learn how to use them or cannot be bothered?
3. It is the parents who should protect their children that is one of the roles of being a parent.
4. Why is it the government find it is acceptable to profile children within phorm's webwise so that anyone with access to the profiles know them from their clicks but then want ISPs to block everything?
5. Many websites with the present filtering completed within schools is wrongly labelled and blocked as I found out while working within school so how can they say they will block correct sites now?

Define "offer".

I see nothing wrong with a ratings system in principle - God knows how they'd actually manage to do it and what sort of cock-up it would be, but that's another issue.

I see nothing wrong with ISPs "offering" a "child-friendly" service, and those who want it doubtless would be happy to pay the same as other customers.

But if "offer" doesn't mean "offer as an alternative to the normal service" and "offer" is spin for "force them to implement it for all customers whether they like it or not" then Andy Burnham should be given a good kick in the things that Kits says he hasn't got. ;)

I've said it before, any sort of filtering should be an option - just like my ISP "offer" an anti-spam service, which I chose to disable in my control panel because I'd rather take my own measures against spam than rely on any other party's filter, no matter how good it's claimed to be - their anti-spam "offering" is there if I want it, and it doesn't cost anything, but they don't force me to use it.

l had a similar discussion with my parents earlier about this subject, and quite honestly l was really disgusted by the fact that they said it was someone elses job to make sure kids keep their mits off adult content, granted when l was younger it was harder to keep me from the adult videos (l admit it, l was quite ingenious at the methods l used to watch porn) however none the less it will start of as a meager system of censoring adult content then eventually the government will decide that they are on to a good thing and start looking into censoring other things that make them look bad...

the net is a place for free speech not censoring, its the parents job to keep their kids away from porn and undesirable content, being computer illiterate is NOT an excuse, content management should be offered with internet by the isps as an OPTION or at least thats what l believe..

I agree with you timeless if they cannot be bothered to protect their children from porn they shouldn't have them. It’s like having a baby and telling the district nurse to come in everyday to change the nappy and feed the child.

You bring a child into the world then it is your responsibility to bring it up to know right from wrong, protect the child from such as porn and paedophiles.

exactly, parents are supposed to teach their children right from wrong! and even if they cannot use the computer then they can at least watch them while they are.. l think that the much better way of filtering content would be to offer such a service like netnanny etc with new computers.

such information would be linked to the computer and preset on the system, if the buyer wishes to remove the software then a special password/pass key should be required to uninstall which can only be provided to someone who proves they are old enough with ID (if the person buying looks young) l think a method such as this would be better than forcing it on everyone.

on another note, basic filtering software does come with windows as standard.. however its kind of annoying since it picks up allot of legit sites, plus if you are clever enough its pretty easy to remove it by deleting a few files, l had to do this on a computer at a place l was doing a course at because some kids messed with the settings (at the time they had a few technicians there who only knew how to use MS office which was very unhelpful when things went wrong, it was either me fixing or another guy who left soon after l started.. seems they hire anyone from new deal just to get them into work even if they dont know their a** from their elbows)

As James said, rating systems already exist and are used so the only real difference the government could bring here would be to enforce something. I don't like the sound of that and I'm not entirely sure how you'd rate ISPreview. We try to block swearing but every once in awhile the odd bad word is missed, does that mean we'd be a U, PG-12 or 15.. pfft.

Then again some ISPs are so bad that perhaps an 18 rating is in order :) , though that is an admittedly very poor joke lol.

Lets turn this around once many years ago the advert's on TV were constant keep under fives safely locked inside. Parents then were parents they enjoyed their children spent time with them. Todays parents seem to give the child a TV, computer etc and leave them to learn about life for themselves. The result gang culture, many under fives playing on unsafe roads, children starting school without any communication skills no understanding how to interact with peers plus younger single parents. Marriage is now forwned on and is less benificial than not being married. The government has been making wrong decisions for years about single parents, parents, education and invision of privacy. Time to reflect as this year ends how many under fives have been kiled on the roads? How many children left unattended on the internet have been injured or kiled yet you suggest to make the internet so a parent can do this.. Totaly stupid everytime a child gets killed injured etc it has always been left on its own. Time parents were just that give them the support to be a parent don't take control of parenting for them.
