Interpreting exchange information

I've checked the status of the exchange near to where I am moving to, and this is what it tells me.

Can anyone translate this into terms which relate to my possible broadband recption now and in the future? I've had a go, but would appreciate any thoughts from forum members.

The exchange....has

ADSL status:
Enabled as of 21/01/2004
ADSL Max status:
Enabled as of 30/03/2006
SDSL status:
Not available
21CN WBC status:
RFS date set : 30/03/2011
21CN PSTN switchover target: Q3 2008

The [clearly very simplistic] way I interprest it is:
ADSL - I can get broadband :D
ADSL Max - I should be able to pay more and get faster broadband
SDSL - more aimed at businesses which need mega-speeds, should not affect me :hrmph:
21CN WBC - another upgrade which means that BT/anyISP can sell me more products which might mean I get faster broadband :hrmph:
21CN PSTN - this has happened, but what is the affect on my service?

thanks in advance

You're more or less correct, although these days ADSLMAX (up to 8Mbps) is the standard so it doesn't technically cost more, if anything MAX services cost less :) . In regards to the last two, 21CN PSTN means your exchange has been upgraded to support BT's latest IP based technology, while WBC hints that you will not be able to get faster than 8Mbps services (e.g. up to 24Mbps via ADSL2+) until March 2011.

More questions...

Thanks Mark - now, next dumb Q: can you explain a bit about ADSL2?

Like what it is?

And whilst trying to work out the speeds i can expect from the area I may move to I've been using this site
http://www.broadbandchecker.co.uk/broadband-checker.php

Are there any others you would recommend? How trustworthy are they?

And, to totally finish you off on the Question front, why do predicted speeds vary so much even though the exchange is the same? Is it purely down to physical distance from the exchange?

thanks once again

Yes, and the quality of your line.

Well, it's not technically how far your house physically is from the exchange, but how long your line is. If someone lives relatively close to an exchange, but their line takes the "scenic route" to get there, then their speed might be less than they expect.

Cheers

thanks for great answers and a good link...it's all there, just a question of knowing where to look.

Just in case anyone is interested, we've decided not to move to the village mainly due to the poor internet performance, and the fact it was not likely to get any better in the near future.

There was no mobile coverage - there was a satellite service but it would have cost 82 quid a month for a 2mb link, crazy.

For me, internet has become an essential service like water or sewage.
Sometimes a lot like sewage...

we're now checking coverage BEFORE we go and look at places.

thanks again.
