IP Stream and Datastream

Simple question

What's the difference and is one better than the other ??

Simple do a search on Google or on the forums.

The main difference the the "backhaul" the links between the BT exchanges and the ISP's own networks.

With IPStream - the ISP uses the BT Collossus network which offers fairly hefty bandwidth capacity; with DataStream the ISP's use an "alternative telco" (eg: energis, telefonica, tiscali) who then pay for "Virtual Circuits" to be installed between the BT exchange and their network, due to the cost quite often small sized links of only a few mb are used, you tend to find higher contention and therefore slower speeds on DataStream.

ADSLGuide have a good FAQ on this here: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp?faq=beginners#Q259

FYI: NDO use IPStream.

This is perhaps the best way to describe the differance.
ISP's using Datastream connections (Tiscali, Bulldog etc) are the ones that are being complained about most on many ADSL forums. This is because BT, under OFCOM rulings, had to open their exchanges up for the sake of competition. Since they had to do this, it now allows ISP's to install there own equipment in the exchange. This is the key to Datastream services.

A Datastream provider can install a 2Mbit circuit into a telephone exchange, but this immediatly causes contention issues, as the capacity to run thousands of connections is not specifically there from the offset.

The main issue currently facing Datastream broadband providers is the speed that users can access the Internet and email services. Because the ISP routes traffic through its own network, the more users on board directly affects the speed in which users can use the Internet. The busier a telephone exchange, the worse the connection speed becomes.

IPStream Broadband Providers (BT, Proweb etc) channel all customers down a 155Mbit network circuit. This is fed directly onto a BT controlled network, which gives us a balanced speed. The number of users connected to the exchange does not affect the connection speeds, as it is a completely balanced network, regulated by OFCOM.

i have just signed up for broadband from www.central-point.co.uk they use telefonica, before i signed up tho i ask do you use, datastream or ispstream, they said we do both, so i told them i want 1meg broadband ipstream, they said my broadband connection will be ipstream as requested, however if they used telefonica for my broadband does that mean the lied to me??? thinking that i wont no anyway? i told them before i placed an order that i wanted ipstream as they said they do both, so thats what i should expect, how can i tell if they lied to me?

Anyone know the answer to Kurts question? I'd be interested in the answer to this one too. :)

You might want to edit your last post and remove some of the more colourful language.

ok well here u go

1.) At the exchange with IPStream your data goes straight onto BT's central pipe
2.) At the exchange with data stream your data travels through a virtual path usually to the telefonica pipe.

From my experience data stream sux, mine has been very slow and unreliable. Also if u r planning on running applications which have multiple connections at any single time (such as p2p apps) data stream is not as quick as ip stream.

go 4 ip stream, it costs a little more but the headaches it can save are worth the extra pennies, TRUST ME ON THIS 1!

Telefonica now offer their ISPs a choice of IPStream or DataStream so, no, CentrlaPoint probably didn't lie!

Duncan.

The fact of the matter is that you are quite rude, and do not know that Centre Point have lied to you, and why should they, at the end of the day? Calling some one a liar without proof can be quite defamatory!!

you reckon, the other guy duncan somthink sounded like he was a central point personel what with him being a new member and the ! at the end of his post, im just stating what ive been told, there websight states there brodband comes from telefonica, even my order status says it has been sent to telefonica for processing, however this is not true so they tell me, it is with tescali as that is what they told me. so there you have it central point have lied to me, wether you want to belive it or not i dont care, im just posting this to let others know that they do lie.

I am nothing to do with Central Point whatsoever. I do however know that Telefonica can now provide IPStream to their customers.

Whether this is what Central Point are providing or not I have no idea, but I doubt they would lie to you.

I was trying to help.

. how do you delete posts? i want to delete all my posts not because i take back all that i have said, as i sure dont, i just want to delete them as if cp read them they might restrict my downloads, :crap: i guess alot of peeps are reluctant to complain on the forums thinking they might get there downloads restricted if the ips comes acrross them.

As far as i'm aware, they will install where a Datastream VP is already in place but if there is none in place, IPStream gets installed.

I don't think it is a matter of choice though, would surprise me if it was as they have a big DS footprint, they'll want to utilise that where possible.
