Is it my ISP or me???

I have recently moved from a stable 1meg connection with Wanadoo, first to 2meg with Tiscali where I experienced exstensive connection losses during peak times (44 disconnections from 5.30pm to 11.30pm in one evening), following the wonderful job their customer services people did I managed to escape. Then I seem to have made my next mistake by moving to PlusNet. I am still experiencing similar problems but my connection seems to level out earlier in the evening (10.30pm ish). Connection seems to last an average of 4 minutes but after the first 2:30 no data can be transferred so I sit and wait for it to drop and re-connect. In some instances it has disconnected again within 3 seconds.

PlusNet's customer services (admittedly considerably better than Tiscali but then they are based in the UK and seem to have some technical knowledge rather than just have lists to read from) have run various tests and everything they have says that my connection is okay. I have even had BT test my line and they too tell me that everything is okay. I have not made any change to my equipment nor have I made any change to the wiring/sockets etc etc etc. The only change I have made is to my ISP. Personally I feel that this issue is down to PlusNet taking on more customers than their network can handle (just as Tiscali seem to have done, the only difference being in the method of the expansion, through aquisition rather than ad campaigns).

Can anyone provide any advice on whether I may be correct in this impression or whether I really should double check (for the umpteenth time) all my kit/wiring? I would like an opinion before I just decide to pull the plug with PlusNet and move to Zen.

Zen Is One Of The Best !

Easy....request a mac code from plusnet and move to zen as zen is one of the best experience and top isps in UK and also the only isp offering 100% uncapped, unrestriction and truely 100% unlimited but you are paying £34.99 monthly for the great 2mb service you get !

I am now had been confirmed from BT order that my activation dates for Zen isp is on Monday, 23rd January at between 06:59am and 11:59am and will down for 20-30 minutes as I am migration to Zen from awful Core isp.

I can't wait !

Sounds like the quality of your phoneline (could just be a problem with the internal extension wiring) may be marginal for a 2mb/s connection.

You can get a very rough idea by checking attenuation and SNR from your router/modem stats, however these are often inacurate see - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm

If I have a problem that I suspect is caused by my ISP, I would try connecting to BT speedtester domain speedtest@speedtest_domain and running the speedtest when the problem is occuring (NB this doesn't work with LLU services). As configuring your modem to connect direct to BT completely bypasses your ISP, if the problem remains it is not the fault of your ISP.

Plusnet may have many critics, but to be honest, my connection with them is always rock solid.

No point in changing ISP until or unless you have cured the problem first, it will only move it to someone elses door.

It may well be that your telephone line cannot support your current speed, or more likely a fault in your own equipment.

I would check all of that first.

Trust me, there is nothing wrong with the reliability of my Plusnet connection.

I agreed with Inactive that plusnet does have rock solid and reliability connection but the let down is traffic shaping, throttle speed, most packages come with very restriction usages level. Broadband plus is restrict to 5gb peak hours. Broadband premier is to be said non-traffic shaping or non-throttle but it does have traffic shaping and awful throttle on p2p even if you are under 20gb restrict during peak hours.

That's why I left them as I get sick of tired and fed up of plusnet not 100% to what customer need. If you are light user, then plusnet suit you fine! But plusnet never suitable for any heavy users.

Thanks bulldog, PlusNet are not pursuing BT to get my connection speed reduced, if this solves my problems then I will probably still look at moving to Zen. I use P2P myself and can do without the traffic shaping hassle.

Due to this being posted twice on the forums I will close this thread and if everyone could respond in this thread.
