Is O2/BE Prepared for the Olympics ?

As per the title, Due to not seeing any statement from them regarding this ,come the Olympics will they have enough bandwidth available to cope with the likely increased demand ?

Or will the customer suffer congestion type issues slow or non loading of existent web pages (BBC) severe packet loss /increase in latency globally, that most probably won't be fixed untill the Olympics have finished

Looking at latest news about BEs network and those that have been upgraded to the so called "NEW" network they seem to have had numerous issues already. I find it particularly funny their newest version of the Thomson routers they supply in many cases need template or telnet modifications to stop them from rebooting/kernal warm resets.

For the already over-subbed broken old network (which it must be before some usergroup member comes rushing to their defence otherwise they wouldnt be upgrading the whole network) I suspect during the olympics we will once again see the all too regular BBC and Iplayer issues.

I imagine for some iplayer is gonna buffer more on their BE connection than it will on a mobile phone. They couldnt configure something right and have it work right for just a single month straight if their lifes depended on it. Their mantra to fix things seems to be to hope users come up with a solution, ala the new router/new network problems and post about it on the forum. Following this predictability i expect a long BE forum thread about latency, BBC issues and staff and usergroup members interupting treating people like idiots asking for ping test and other similar nonsense when its their broke product is literally a week away.

LOL

Most ISPs haven't issued a statement about the Olympics and those that have tended to be more at the business end of the market because that's where the real concern is - office traffic etc.

I can't speak for BE specifically but as we keep saying, events like the Olympics are not uncommon and ISPs usually have spare capacity to cope. Not to say that there won't be any slowdown, which is perhaps to be expected, but if there are any more serious issues then I'd be quite surprised and the related ISP would no doubt suffer some embarrassment.

In any case when most of us finish work to go home we don't generally switch on a live iPlayer stream to watch the event but our living room TV.

There are some small businesses who perhaps foolishly rely upon their be/o2 retail connections for those businesses although businesses are not supported , But at the end of the day every sporting event should not have a negative impact on any connection if easynet (ukonline) could always manage it then why can't others ? And wether of not i use my connection for business or not should not mean that i get a poorer service when the costs are very similar in price, so that in my book does not let them of the hook

Indeed and unless i am remembering wrongly BT as an example had issues during the world cup at one point (think there was a news item on this site about that). In general considering internet video year on year continues to grow at a rapid rate its obviously no longer acceptable for any ISP to have silly issues where they cant cope with demand, when they well know the demand is going to be there.

The traffic trend on BE seems to peak in the evenings (6pm to midnight) so I expect one of the "slackest" times for the BE network is during the working day.

f8lure graphs will be watched during the events and anything noteworthy will be posted to the usergroup site.

The exchanges affected seem to be on the old network. Only a few exchanges have been moved to the new network so far, see the tech notes for the list.

Eeek looks like they shouldn't had abandoned the upgrade to PIMLICO. Or i assume they abandoned it as that was on the list for an upgrade was it not? Ironic as that also seems to be ONE OF the worse affected (lots of nice consistent red in its chart).

Though to be honest the NEW network seems a bit silly anyway and another thing (like Fibre promises) not likely to be done even by the end of next year considering the only listings are for parts of London at the moment and im guessing half of what was listed has been delayed.

Id rant more but nothing shocks me with them anymore, how poor things will perform has become beyond predictable.

Maybe I've missed something or assumed wrong but I thought all the affected exchanges were the old network, will check when I get a moment. The upgraded date wiki page should be up to date.

As for packet loss it is probably that line as the current congestion problem manifests itself as high ping as well. If just packet loss shows for be graphs it won't be related.

PIMLICO was definitely on the list as one exchange/area to be upgraded/be part of the NEW network. I remember it being mentioned in a discussion thread elsewhere previously quite a while ago.

Im not sure on the others, im going totally by memory. You are probably right the others that suffered are all old network exchanges/areas.

PIMLICO though was definitely supposed to be part of the NEW network though, im just assuming/guessing it was delayed. A bad decision on BEs part again.

I freely admit ive not seen the updated wiki list. Will go have a hunt for it though, im curious now what has and has not actually been done and how "on schedule" or how much of their promise they have kept (I AGAIN from memory only seem to recall them saying they would all be done around June'ish time).

PIMLICO WRPIM 05/07/2012 ABANDONED 06/07/2012 +30 days Migration abandoned on 04/07/2012, pending rescheduling.

Thanks for the link, i couldn't find it. Nice to see though i wasn't insane and PIMLICO was indeed supposed to be part of the NEW network but has been delayed. The roll out in general doesn't look too impressive, i wonder why so many have been abandoned/delayed?

It really is about time they got their act together. In several areas.
