Is the upgrade to Windows 7 worth it?

I've got a dual boot with XP Pro and Windows 7 and I'm thinking of ditching Win 7.

I've been using the Win 7 OS for some time and I'm thinking of dumping it as the video out via my nvidia card is a bit hit and miss, sometimes not cloning to my tv. However, cloning using XP Pro works fine every time.

Apart from some fancy background pics, I cant really say Win 7 gets me excited. I'm glad p2p exists so I didn't have to buy it ;)

What do other members think of Win 7? Is it keeping up with the Jones's or a real leap forward?

Downloaded it when M$ was offering the free trial. Played about with it in a VM and decided it was basically Vista MK II. Forgot about it (though I will probably buy the M$ Win 7 Pocket Guide just in case). :hrmph:

Yep, got your PM. Thanks. :)

Don't forget nvidia are always releasing new, and hopefully better, drivers on their site.

I like Windows 7 a lot.

I run a few broken old Xbox 360s as media extenders, and Windows 7 has given them a new lease of life with its support for the DivX/XviD and H.264 formats. (XP/Vista Media Centres only support WMV and MPG with extenders).

I have a few programs which refuse to run properly (if at all) under Windows 7, which is why I dual boot with XP, but as time goes by XP is getting used less and less.

I can't say I have ever had any issues with Nvidia drivers.

Virtual XP does let the old progs run and does it well (assuming you have the hardware), same goes for virtual vista too btw.

Rarely if ever use virtual xp as nothing I still use didn't work on Vista and mostly everything works on 7. (better than it did on Vista)

I don't even have an XP disc in the house anymore.
Shudder at the thought of having to fix an XP machine now.

Re Gfx and nVidia... sounds like it must be an older card.
nVidia's drivers have always very good for 7 (even since beta)
Tried mine cloning to the TV (DVI to monitor HDMI to TV) no hassles at all.

Is it a leap forward?

imo it is far superior to anything else M$ has ever done. I liked Vista and still can't understand why so many hate it. Any reason I've ever been given comes down to either lack of hardware (in which case you either can't afford / are too cheap / too stuborn to upgrade so why run it?) or those who say that they can't do the things they used to be able to do on XP. Can't say I can agree with any of that as could do everything I did on XP (and more) on Vista... and it had a proper x64 version.

So as not to turn into (more of) a rant think I'd better stop there.

I do have one major gripe on Win 7 but can't even blame M$.
HP I can blame as my nice colour laser is without a driver from them. Seems to be a HP thing as they did the same with Vista drivers.

Anyways...

Wouldn't dream of going back to Vista now I have Win 7.
I hope to destroy every XP disc I ever come across.
(Still keep my Win 2000 Pro disc as that was a good OS and run a virtual copy for some really old legacy stuff I still use)

i installed a Home Premium 64 bit version of Win7 on my mum's new PC 2 weeks ago; now I wish I had installed XP!!! NIGHTMARE!!

And as mentioned above, too many companies are not producing dedicated drivers for it, you go to the Brother website for a Win7 printer driver and it tells you to use the basic one built in to windows!!!
That is not just one, old obscure Brother printer, but ALL OF THEM!!

M$ can kiss my b ig hairy @$$ before I buy another copy of Win7.

I run the 32bit version fine on my laptop.
The problem with 64bit is you need signed drivers for it to even think about installing hardware, with 32bit you can probely get away with a vista driver.
Everything bar the cam worked straight off the DVD, no messing around with driver cd/sites.
Cam driver was a win vista driver which worked fine.
Aero works great and i only got a 2.9 on the windows rateing, lowest was my intel on board graphics.
