Is this a fair support response?

Hi,

No, I think thats the true line attenuation. Its about 10DB per kilometer from the exchange, and I am about 5.3KM as the crow flies. It does drop if I leave it on all night, to a synch speed of around 3.8MB, thus 3MB line download speed. But I switch it off when I go to bed still synched at over 4MB, and in the morning it always comes up over 4MB, so the profile stays fixed at 3.5MB download speed.

About three months ago I changed to the Netgear DG834, and the synch speed went up between 400 to 500K straight away, and the router hold in at night with a s/n of -1DB. Would thoroughly recommend this Netgear.

Hi twds.

Thanks for taking time to answer.

Had heard that the Netgear 834's were good - but your 400-500 kpbs speed improvement is the first real example anyone has given me.

Definite food for thought. If I could regularly get that sort of improvement I'd definitely get a 1.5 Mpbs profile - and possibly even the new 1750 kbps profile that kicks in at the end of July.

Might have to let the moths out of my wallet;)

Cheers - TP

Would old ADSL 2MB be a possible direction?

Hi otester,

Just noticed this comment in one of your earlier posts.

I've had similar thoughts - my old 500k static service was great - no errors, no problems, really stable.

I get improved speeds on the ADSLMax service - seem to have settled at 1 Meg - but every now and again the errors on the line take over, and a router reset is required to correct things.

I've often wondered if asking for an ADSL 1Meg or 2Meg static service would improve things.

If you decide to ask F4 if this is possible - please post the outcome - and the results if you take the plunge. I'm sure that there are a lot of people on noisy lines would be interested in the outcome;)

Cheers - TP

I can certainly recommend them. They are available on ebuyer.co.uk for £44.46 delivered on super saver, but when I purchased you could get thru google checkout and get an additional ten pounds off. They were actually slightly dearer when I purchased, but with the ten pounds off I paid £37.68, which I thought was an absolute bargain.

One further advantage of the Netgear, is that you can use free routerstats straight from the download site, so I monitor S/N all the time, and can see it drop at night.

Bigbrother is probably right about your upstream attenuation.

Try the detailed stats link (top) here:- http://pathogenrush.blogspot.com/search/label/DG834

The user interface reports half the value obtained from avsar_modem_stats. I'm sure it is a bug in the UI on some firmwares.

Hi,

Ah, didn't realise he meant upstream attenuation. Doesn't really worry me as I am mainly concerned with downstream.

Have just run speedtest, and results are what I would expect. I use BT business broadband, which is also excellent.

Speed results.

And thanks also for Mel's notes, excellent.

I've seen some favourable comments about the 2-wire BT Business hub 2700HGV (unfortunately it is only available on ebay for non-BT customers and has to be used with a DNS poisoning trick to make it work with non BT ISPs)

Some Speedtouch routers get glowing reports too and have the advantage that the Target Noise margin can be tweaked by + or - 5db.

Even better price, well done. Any idea how you can tweak the S/N on the Netgear ? Would like to change mine to 3DB.

Unfortunately I don't know of any SNR tweaks for the DG834. You'd probably have to rewrite its modem driver :(. The one thing that may work is to only reboot/ switch on the router when the noise margin is at its best = usually in the morning and avoid rebooting it when the noise margin is low.

Broadcom chipset based routers with the right firmware can be tweaked using a built in utilitity (although some of the more recent firmwares remove this feature). This includes several models of Speedtouch routers, the BT Home hub with early firmware and the Netgear DG834GT. I believe I read that certain routers can be tweaked more than the + or - 5db

Conexant accessrunner based routers can also be tweaked however don't bother with these as by all accounts I've read, you are likely to get a significantly worse sync rate unless you have a very low attenuation. Well I guess it might be possible to use one to unstick a stuck IP Profile, if forcing the sync rate down works, which I've seen suggested as a possible solution.

Just bought a Zoom X6 wireless ADSL router from Pissy World, so I could check my old one wasn't causing the problems I have been having.
It is very good, has 4 10/100 Ethernet ports and comprehensive set=up and network monitoring built in; as well as up to x6 wireless speed on .g spec (125mbps).

I am getting similar S/N margins on my setup, but lower noise levels (21/37 -up/down), and syncing at 6366 at this moment in time; it has dropped to mid 4000.
This on a line that can only take a 2Mb fixed speed connection (ADSL1).

I suggest you find a good fast website with BIG downloads available, and D/L some stuff during the quieter parts of the night as this is supposed to help boost the sync rates when ADSL2 is bedding in.
