Is this the only way to connect a replacement router ?

I want to upgrade our account with Gigaclear and have them replace the original router they supplied, a Genexis DRG 700/7000 with their Linksys Velop.
However they tell me that they would not replace but leave the old Genexis in place on the living room wall and "bridge" ????? to the Linkys with an ethernet cable.
"Please note we would not have to remover your Genexis router, as we would disable it as a router, which we call a Bridge. Effectively it just becomes an inlet for your Broadband and through a Ethernet Cable connects to the new Lynksys Velop router and this provides you connection and with Wi-Fi."

The whole idea of wifi was to do away with wires and I do not what two boxes fastened to the wall.
Does it have to be done this way, can they not just simply remove the Genexis and link their optic cable to the Linksys in its place ?

Any thoughts appreciated
Cheers

The Linksys Velop is essentially just a WiFi mesh system that's also trying to act a bit like a fully fledged router (even though it has a lot of limits on that front), so turning the Genexis into more of a bridge for the FTTP to Ethernet side may actually work better in some respects. But you do still need the Genexis.

Having said that I do agree with the desire to use kit of your own choosing via a single-box approach. Unfortunately, I don't think anybody has yet posted a way to extract the necessarily details from the Genexis and thus get Gigaclear's connection working with a truly third-party device for everything.

In my experience with FTTP networks - it's often remarkably simple.

I've only got experience with GPON and EPON FTTP networks, I have used one of the tiny Huawei modems as the inbetween of the fibre cable itself and my actual router.

I just had to get the LOID from the ISP and input this into the modem settings, then connect with my username and password via PPPoE connection from the router.

My current ISP (non-UK) provides an all in one fibre endpoint / router / VoIP etc device which is obviously a bit limited for what I need. Would something like this be possible with gigaclear?

A lot of ISPs will lock the router down, so you can't easily do that, leaving the customer stuck on whatever router is provided (this being connected into the ONT they install).
