Currently with Orange (2mb Service) and want to change to an 8mb service. Contenders are Be, BT and Sky, and all are available through my exchange. Problem is it's like comparing apples, oranges and bananas - they all offer different products. Any views on who to avoid?

On a slightly more technical note if we opt for Sky and their Sky Talk service does that mean that our entire phone service is provided by Sky and not BT (pay BT line rentla only)? What is the quality of that service? You hear loads about the quality of their broadband, but what about the phone?

I use Be and am happy with them, but my experience of their support is not brilliant.

However, since I rarely need to contact them, I don't mind.

your phone service will still be with bt

sky only responsible for call charging. the line and quality of call is still down to bt but u benefit from lower call charges

Sky will only work with sky equipment, and the password and user name are hard wired into it, so if it goes tits up you have to get sky to supply a new one, you cant just pop round to your local PC dealer and buy one.
BT tech support is India
Orange LLU is a nightmare.

Why dont you look at the top 10 list on this site, check out their packages and try one?? unlike some bigger companies they do not tie you into 12 or 18 month contracts.

You can get the user details from the sky equipment although it is a nightmare to do and any time you contact sky you will need to put their equipment back on the line. I would only got for ISP's like Sky, Be etc who do the ADSL2+ if i was close the the exchange, I am on a provider who will provide me 2+ if I wanted it but I am to far away to make it worth while.

BT support isnt fantastic but with the network they have unless its something major it shouldnt really be a issue, never been a customer going of a educated assumption of a generalisation of what I know of BT.

Orange I've not heard much about lately but what I have heard in the past would put me off going to them.

One thing I have noticed that you have choose the bigger providers might as well throw AOL and talk talk in there :P lol

Like The Cap'in has said look at the recommended by others and least complaints you shouldn't go far wrong.

All you have to do to get the user details of a sky router is click the link below (this may change as they've got a replacement router comming soon).

The main complaints I've seen about Sky's service seem to be about cokc-ups durring provisioning, such as activated but router delayed, orders being rejected (eg due to invalid/ wrongly entered mac code) but not able to reorder because of the rejected order stuck on their system.

I suppose another possible issue for some Sky LLU customers is that their system doesn't automatically adjust target margins to obtain a reliable connection. So if your line is not so hot you'll either have to ring support to get your sync rate capped or increase the target margin yourself. Of course many users would probably consider not having the sync rate plummet when you line is playing up as a plus :D

I gather like many larger ISPs, Sky support is not so hot (can't possibly be as bad as AOL though - well I hope not)

No, Orange has to be No.1 for cr@p support, they still haven't sorted out my sisters problem which has been ongoing since EASTER!!

ps
My sustained download speeds have improved by about 50% since BT fitted a new cable to my house. (Old one had multiple fractures in it !!!!)
