Hi as of this time 2 weeks ago my bt unlimited connection has dropped from a 6 meg line to an appalling .25 of a meg, i was just wondering how long an issue like this can persist after my initial complaint that causes the contract with them to be void or for them to waver the cancellation fee thanks a lot for your time.

How long is a piece of string....

I had similar problem, added to by having to deal via ISP.
There was some interminent noise on a line (just half a mile), it took 6 months and three different(!) BT engineer visits to sort out, while at all times being threaten with having to pay, as they found nothing above their low limits.
And they never told me what the problem was.

Martin

You can find some useful details about this, including Ofcom's Code of Practice on broadband speeds, over in our complaints section.

..and here for something of direct relevance:

Sadly Ofcom stopped short of forcing ISPs into giving customers the flexibility of being able to exit their contract (without penalty) when such situations occur, although your performance drop would fall into a fault category. Is there any chance you could paste your router stats (noise margin, attenuation etc.) so we can see what's happening on your line?

Hey thanks for the reply's :D i was supposed to have a bt engineer here today guess what...didnt turn up *sigh* on another note this is the info you asked for i hope it helps a bit this is doing my head in there is only so many hours i can spend talking to india repeating the same thing.

ADSL Settings

VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation G.992.5 Annex A
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 31.1 dB / 7.4 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 42.1 dB / 20.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 16.0 dBm / 1.5 dBm

Hope this helps

Here is your problem;
Noise margin (Down) 31.1 dB

Do you hear any nose on the phone when talking to others?
Could you remove all none ADSL equipment from your line leave just the filter and router in and take the router stats again then post them here?

My line only has just router on as i dont use it for the phone so what ya see is what ya get :D is this my end or my isp's as i have tried diffrent fittings right down my line in my house.

High noise down is normally on the voice side while high SNR up tends to be within your home. This could be pots but as you don't use it for phone then you hadn't picked up on the noise.

Have you got an old phone you could plug in but remove adsl first then dial 150 asking them to check the line. Do not mention ADSL as they will say that needs doing via your ISP which ends up resulting in a charge.

If this has just happened then I'm wondering if its a degraded aluminium line or perhaps a faulty microfilter.

Looks like a simple low sync event, reboot the router and the speeds will go back up, if it doesnt over 48 hours then request your ISP to do some line tests on it to see if there is a underlying problem.

Hey thanks for all the reply's guys still getting no where with BT on 2 times an engineer was supposed to come now and both times a no show i am starting to get a little annoyed. My mate who does server hosting says he thinks its a degraded line as we have been over all my cables twice now heh. Keeping my fingers crossed this gets sorted soon and if it does ill let ya all know the outcome :D
