Hi I am doing some research on behalf of my daughter who is moving house. She is looking for a good, reliable ISP which has flexible support opening hours. As she will be out from 8.00am to 630 pm she needs an ISP that will be contactable outside normal working hours. Also she would preferably like an ISP that also provides telephone line.

Can someone make recommendation>

Thanks

LOL thats terrible advice if they want good support, BE broadband support is indeed 24/7 but its overseas and the phone system seems to be VOIP or similar based which leads to calls cutting in and out (going silent) or cutting you off entirely.

They are also not currently a reliable provider and have issues with peering and routing.

AND BEFORE i get into an arguement with some anon poster, the OP can check if what im saying is true for them self.......

0808 101 34 30 is BEs number and i think its currently option 6 for tech support.

Oh and im currently with BE and cant wait to escape.

Id suggest to the OP someone like ADSL24, or similar small friendly company from the content of the post.

They do phone call bundles, various LLU and non LLU broadband helpings (C&W im not sure who provides their other LLU package), FTTC options if the OP can get it/afford it (something BE basically have no real plans for), and to round off, support is UK based also. :)

PlusNet also offers 24/7 support and on a free phone 0800 number.

Yep Plusnet is another possible recommendation if the OPs daughter does not require the use of P2P services and in general does not plan on downloading the entire internet. They are also pretty cheap, ideal if you just want website browsing, bit of email and odd download :)

Thanks for replying - all seems a bit academic now. I have found out that the house she is moving to is 6.5 km from the nearest BT exchange (Dummer) and that the fastest speed she is likely to achieve is 1Mbs :( I didn't realise that there were still places with media black holes.

She is investigating the possibility of WiFi broadband or satellite (not sure satellite will be an option though). If going through the BT line she will probably pick Zen - although a bit pricey for such low speed. Support hours are reasonable and from my experience of large providers they are likely to be better.

Still can't get over the 1Mbs!!!

Plusnet, providing she doesnt need hundreds of gigs of data a month may well be a good choice then. Call and broadband bundles from them are pretty cheap and considering the Dummer exchange/area doesnt seem to have any LLU or wifi services in the area i could find info about you may as well go for the cheapest service possible (as long as it meets her data consumption requirements) as they are not likely to get high speeds :(

Coincidentally if you see the sites main page/news there is a story about a Plusnet calls and broadband bundle at a reduced rate for 3 months today :)
