ISP without active phone line

Hi all,

I'm new in the UK and I moved into a flat without an active phone line.

The previous tenant used Virginmedia, but I would like to stay away from Virgin because I hear about their traffic throttling management.

I've looked at top 20 ISPs and many (if not all?) require an active phone line for their service.

Are there ISPs besides Virgin, which don't require an active phone line?

Which phone line provider would you recommend if I just use it to set up a broadband connection?

Thanks for your replies!

Kind Regards,

Pretty much all of the major national internet providers will require an active fixed phone line, although Virgin Media do allow you take broadband as a truly standalone option. If you want to be completely rid of the fixed line though then your best bet is a Mobile Broadband service or Satellite but the latter tends to be more expensive and less flexible.

Most of the smaller and more reputable providers, such as Zen Internet and Aquiss etc., do still allow you to order broadband as a standalone service but you'll still need an active fixed phone line to make the connection work; this is kind of difficult to avoid, it's somewhat of a necessity for fixed line ISPs to need a fixed line :).

Another option is to make friends with an internet enabled neighbour and then ask if you can leach their connection for a suitable fee.

Remember not to suck down too much bandwidth if they have a limited package.

depending on the area there might be a wireless service available, tho its hit or miss to whether there is one in your area.

Even a "throttled" cable connection can still easily outperform anything else available depending on what your options are.

If you can get a "fibre to the cabinet" service then you could pick between the two.

If only ADSL is available cable would have to be diabolical in your area to be even slower than that. (You get a 30 day guarantee so if it is pants, then you can go elsewhere)

If you can't get FTTC and you don't want to try Virgin then you may be left with a choice of ADSL or 3G.

If your ADSL option is only going to give you a few meg down then 3G might actually be quicker.

Which doesn't require a phone line.

On the other hand, the data gets expensive if you use a lot of it.

So while it is possible to have the "no phone line" scenario if you end up in a situation where it's the best option then it's probably because the range of options isn't great to start with and so is not the most positive outcome.
