Error 500 - Internal Server Error
Oh noes.. for some reason ISPreview.co.uk's server just fell over, possibly after drinking too much last night.
Problems like this usually resolve automatically if you use your browsers BACK button and or try to reload the page again.
Failing that, please return to the main site - www.ispreview.co.uk
And again, I think there might be some Klingons on the starboard bow Jim.was down again for me aswell
If it becomes a routine thing, Cloudflares free plan is very good at blocking it and they cache site images / static content on all of their edge servers for freeLooks like a possible DDoS.
Not just for us, but for everyone involved really! Is the site not routed through cloudflare for ddos protection? If not, maybe thats something worth considering to reduce any impact for us![]()
I’d usually agree but you don’t have to use their SSL certificates and the only reason they can offer so much for free is their sizeAm I the only person who doesn't like the idea of the site being routed through Cloudflare? They control way too much of the internet imo and I would prefer to see the site being routed through a smaller provider.
Above all, it is your site to run how you please. You offer this to us for free, so you're within your rights to host it how you please (whilst obviously abiding by all the regulatory requirements!)The ability to enable CDN protection via Cloudflare, if deemed necessary, does exist and is relatively easy (almost a flick of the switch). But I prefer to analyse the traffic first and CDNs do tend to break certain things on the site. In the meantime, I've put some systems into a static cache state (locked down).
But I hope you understand if I don't discuss security issues / mitigations in public too much.
None of the outages have lasted too long to be honest Mark, just a few minutes at a time, I think we can just about manage to cope for now.Just a little update. It's a very simplistic ping/http flood DDoS, seemingly harnessing masses of TOR exit notes, as well as servers from across Russia, China, Albania, Iran etc. The server does have a firewall but adapting to floods like this, where masses of IPs frequently change (blocking them doesn't stop the problem), can be tedious and may mean I end up flicking the CDN switch for a bit.
You'll probably be seeing those 500 errors on and off for a bit, though, so just try to be patient and ignore them. Not the first time we've had a DDoS to deal with, it's somewhat par for the course.
I have no doubt you aren't the only person who feels that way. I'm indifferent as they're very good at what they do and can take a heck of a banging from the bots.Am I the only person who doesn't like the idea of the site being routed through Cloudflare? Well, the CEO is suing neighbours over dogs: https://www.theregister.com/2024/04/29/cloudflare_ceo_dog_lawsuit/I have no doubt you aren't the only person who feels that way. I'm indifferent as they're very good at what they do and can take a heck of a banging from the bots.
