ISPr Listings System Test

I'd like to get some feedback on what you folks think of our forthcoming new ISP Listings system. You can preview it using an example 'Bundled Broadband' category, which means any ISP that is able to offer a broadband and line rental service together (Mobile phone contracts and TV are considered options - not part of the cost but listed where available):

(Click ISP names for further details)

Typically data fields would differ between other categories (e.g. unmetered, ADSL etc.) and some of the information listed is not complete. I’ve left out discussion forum links until the final data entry pass, while review links will be excluded until after the new ‘Reader Reviews’ system has been completed (uses different URL’s).

Being a small not-for-profit website we don’t have the human resources to list every ISP’s package or feature and are thus using a cost benchmark of £25 for the above options (closest package to that price). Sorry we don’t have further categories ready for viewing yet, after all this is just a test :) . So what information fields do you think could be included or is it adequate?

We may also list whether the ISP is member of the ISPA and has an ADR scheme, although many vISP/Resold providers fail to make this information clear. So far I haven’t had a chance to add this, depends on whether people want it or not.

there is one suggestion ld like to make...

that being more a navigation issue between providers, in short l believe it would be nice to have an A to Z of providers instead of just 1 and upward in pages, l believe that way isps will be easier to locate especially considering the fact some will only be wanting to locate to leave reviews and others may specifically looking for an isp thats been recommended.

in short up til now when lve wanted to leave reviews or read them lve pretty much had to guess which pages they were on, but say lm looking for tiscali (bad reference but just an example lol)it would be allot easiest just to press T and look through one or two pages than have to look through many more because l guessed wrong.

It should be possible to add a "Search for ISP name" feature, which might be a better solution than that.

hmm maybe but l still like the idea of being able to click on letters and view by letter... one reason is down to not having to remember weird spellings of some ISP names it just seems like a good idea otherwise :| but then thats my personal opinion :D

Listing 8mb as the download speed could be a little misleading to the uninformed. As we know, its pretty certain that nobody is going to get that speed on standard ADSL Max. IMHO even listing it as "up to 8mb" is still pushing it a bit.

Maybe you could simply describe the connections as "ADSL Max*"

*Your speed will vary depending on certain factors such as distance from your local telephone exchange, line quality, network congestion and fair use policies.

Since it's broadband related, it's only fitting that there should be at least one asterisk in there somewhere...

Good point Agrajag, I'm going to report this site to the ASA about it

Really it should be MaxDSL or ADSLMax as that is what the product is from BT or the ISP's own product if it is LLU, also contention ratios (not many understood this anyway) is in the past it is minimum garenteed bandwidth now on all DSL products from BTwholesale, Also instead of just no in some of the answer put down as extra and the basic price in brackets?

It looks like the ISP only does that one package it might be worth while putting typical package and a see (more) link and that go to the packages pages of the ISP, I think the My SQL databases is a bit OTT for the avg user and they wouldnt be interested that and the people who do want it will go for a hosting or dedicated SQL package.

Just a few things for you to think about adding/taking away/changing, if you do need any help give me a shout.

indeed, personally lve never used ISP email through hating the fact l loose it when moving to a new one.

I'm with timeless on the A to Z pages listing the providers. I also hate having to guess which page an ISP is likely to be on.

Layout wise it's looking very clean fresh and uncluttered. :D

If you do a search for just say V it would bring up all ISPs with V in the name.

Just tried that it doesn't work*, it draws a blank every time.

*on the old system!

EDIT: Does work on the new system, but still not a very good way to search!

I can do A-Z listings manually but it causes some technical issues with how the list itself is ordered and presented, so I've compromised and added a 'Search ISP Names' box to the top instead. There's also now a star next to the 'DL Speed' part of the listing with some ALT text explaining how speeds can vary, which also links to the Info. key page.

Regarding e-mail, I agree on the points made although that aspect is tucked away in the individual ISP pages and we’re trying to cater for less experienced users too, not just those familiar with ISP’s and services. What may appear obvious to you and I can be different for others.

I may remove MySQL in the future, but will leave it in place for now because I’m quite interested to see how many ISP’s include it in their webspace :) . Cheers for the useful feedback.

Not surprised, we don't have any ISP search or comparison facilities on the old system  .
