ISPreview Live chat Test

Some may have noticed that I removed the old IRC based live chat system from the site just prior to the new design going live. There were several reason for this including the inherent security problems with IRC, compatibility with some website browsers and the fact that those connecting through the site had to download Sun's Java client. We're currently trying this out as a possible replacement for the old system:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/chat.shtml

Its AJAX based and uses the forum to manage usernames and permissions (mods on the forum become mods in the chat etc.), although guests can post too. It doesn't require the JAVA library to be downloaded as it only uses browser standard scripting and appears fairly compatible. It also doesn’t suffer from the same security problems as IRC.

Let me know your thoughts.

looks interesting, wonder how many peeps log into it :p

I have been in twice and know of two others but there is no way of telling. Not sure if it is possible to idle in all day as I do in the present IRC channel to help ppl if they eed it.

works pretty well l must say, you can add me to the ppl kits has seen and chatted to, along with fast :D

Yes, seems fine to me, Mark. :)

I'm far too slow a typist to actually *use* live chat - I'd be about six sentences behind everyone else all the time, but I popped in just to see if it functioned without any messing about with settings etc. on my part, and it all seems to work.

just a random ideal but would it be possible to have some sort of notification of users within the room... for example: [Chatroomlink]{number of users within room}

or something else embedded into the forum navbar above links or something, l tend to sometimes visit but id visit more given that users were there and could see someone was there.

There is code to do that but the scripts author has so far only posted details about how to implement it within PHPBB2 and 3, thus I'm busy researching the best implementation with vB because it's better to use vB's code hooks than just edit it into a file.

indeed, makes allot of sense to save work in future... when VB added the hooks system they instantly became my all time favourite forum script, not that l personally would have used anything else before anyways.

Upgraded the chat to include a few new features and sound prompts.

nice :)

I'm with Kits on this. It's not convenient to have a browser running just to stick around in chat. IRC was much better where you could use a client of your choice that sit's open with not only one channel but other channels and networks. As for needing something simple that require's no java or indeed flash then maybe cgiirc.org has the solution your looking for. This way the regulars can stay in the IRC with their fave client ready to help and ppl can drop in an join on the most simple of browsers using something like cgi:irc.

Cueball :)
