Issues with 3 Broadband (Huawei 535) & External WAP

Hi everybody I am after some advice re the setup I have. My wife runs a shop with a Tp-Link Omada WiFi access point. post the lockdown we need to run some virtual appointments via Zoom, etc. The existing broadband is too slow to provide a satisfactory Zoom connection so we have moved to 3.

Unfortunately when I connect the WAP to one of the LAN port it drops out every 5 - 10 minutes. The LAN light on the front follows this pattern i.e when the WAP cloud indicates it up it is sold on but when it drops the light flashes until the WAP is back on line.

I have read somewhere that 3 does double NATing I think this may be an issue as the WAP is controlled via a Cloud based application.

Has anyone come across anything like this before and is there any advice on what I can do to resolve this situation....luckily we are only on a pay monthly contract at the moment so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work.

Thanks in advance.

Jon.

Lets start with some basic items...

Have you tried a different ethernet cable between the two devices to eliminate an issue with that?

Which ethernet port on the Three router are you connected to? There is (usually) one port that is a WAN/LAN port that has some 'intelligence' behind it which attempts to determine if the device connected is a LAN device or another WAN - it might be detecting the TPLink as a WAN device (after the 5-10mins) and so dropping the connection.

If your Three router is configured to use the '3internet' APN then it will get a public IP address and there won't be any double-NAT in play. If it uses the 'three.co.uk' APN then it will have a private IP and be in a double-NAT situation.

Hi Gavin, yes i have tried a couple of different Ethernet cables and I think I have tried another port i can't honestly remember. next time we are there I'll try another port and it is defiantly on the three.co.uk APN so I'll change that as well.

Are there any disadvantages to using the 3internet APN?

Cheers.

No, there is no down-side.

The downside would be with the three.co.uk APN if you attempted to self-host something like a server on your LAN and want that accessible externally (through opening ports for port forwarding) - as you have no control over the Three NAT you cannot configure it to forward incoming requests to your server, making external access impossible through the double-NAT situation.

You say the WAP is configured through a cloud-based application so the double-NAT situation might be where things are going awry.
If the cloud is trying to talk to the WAP but cannot locate it as it cannot negotiate through the double-NAT.
In that situation it would be the cloud that is instigating the connection and I simply don't know if that occurs - I could understand if the WAP 'phoned home' to the cloud, but not sure about the other way - I just don't have any knowledge of the TPLink product or function.

Hi the Tp-Link Omada WiFi access point has a controller (OC200) that I access via the web so I think the double NATing is the main issue.....fingers crossed.

Planning to go to the shop this afternoon to drop some stuff off so I'll have a play with it then.
