Issues with Vivaciti

Hi all, hoping for some help with this.

I was on standard ADSL with them, via entanet. This was fine, but I was constantly paying more for extra bandwidth after getting netfilx.

So I moved to unlimited LLU. What a mistake.

Since then my connection has been extremely annoying. Most obvious problem is that we can rarely download anything from the play (Android) store on mobiles, tablets etc.

I have swapped routers, tried with 3 different ones so I know it's not that. Also does it on a variety of android devices, so it's not those either.

Steam (gaming platform) is also having issues. Games constantly disconnect, and the steam forums often take 20 seconds to load a page. Tracerts show nothing untoward, and here is all the info I can get from the router.

They have been contacted and a ticket raised, but haven't heard anymore as it's obviously passed to talktalk, whom I dispise.

I was about to go onto plusnet, but looking at the forum they have serious issues.

I have looked at Zen and Aquiss, both are obviously good but charge the earth, which I simply can't afford each month. Any recommendations for unlimited (or huge allowance) on an ISP? I am not too fussed about speed, and although fibre is available it seems far more expensive.

Sky if you want cheap unlimited and a non-TalkTalk LLU platform.

One thing with Vivacity, I'd ask what MTU you need on that line and then make sure your routers MTU setting matches it. If the MTU settings are too different then it can cause all sorts of connection oddness.

So....I'd strongly recommend not going with Vivaciti. Their support clearly don't have a clue, and they don't seem to raise connection issues with their provider.

I asked for the MTU, and was told it 'shouldn't make any difference.' I did get this though, and it hasn't sorted the issue.

They said various things, like how many devices etc were using the connection as this could be the cause. They did not give me my MAC in my first request, and I'm still waiting for it now.

I was going to go fibre, but I read that it can only be used from the master socket - this is rather difficult since unless I want to shell out for wireless cards/dongles for the PCs upstairs, it's not an option.

I could of course go for ADSL, and on unlimited that's ADSL2, but would the same problems remain?

Confused and frustrated.

Update - What a shower. I can see what Kyle had issues with.

Here's the email:

I am sorry you are not happy, I can see a large number of things had been done to try to resolve your issue, the last response we had received from you was that the connection is more stable now, our last update to you was has the line remained stable, to this we received no reply from you at all.

Your MAC is:
We will reply to the said comments you may have placed so others will know what we have done and that you have made rating after telling us the service was now stable just to make sure other people get the full story.

If you had been looking for the complaints procedure you would have found them in our terms and conditions.

Please let us know once your migration away has completed so we can close your account down.

Regards
Vivaciti

To explain this - I last emailed a reply to the previous emails saying it had got bad again, and a response was 'Are you having stability issues?' It was stable for about 1 day.

I have only just got my MAC, over 15 days from requesting it and only after threatening Ofcom.

All they seemed to do, was lower the line snr, which they only did after I asked for my MAC. They never offered any solutions, dispite providing line data, trying 3 different routers, etc. Oh, there was when they said I might be using too many devices.

Please no-one touch them with a barge pole.

As part of a standard engineer FTTC installation you can request an extension to be run to a convenient place - link. If you don't want to try that Homeplugs are pretty good - link.

Plusnet are normally fine, but at the moment they have long waits on customer service, that's about their only downside. :)

Are you really getting 12MB down on a 6db SNR??

My SNR is 11.9 and I am only getting 5.5Mb

.87Mb upstream is pretty standard for a "1Mb Up" ADSL connection.

Over what time period did 10 CRCs occur?? What other errors do your router log table show??

Thanks Bob - annoyingly it's located right by the front door, and no power socket nearby. I see the extension kit is a cable - so unless I route it through the plaster it's going to be showing for a long way.

That kinda takes fibre out as an option :(

Captain, I have no idea. That's what my router says and the result of a speed test. I'm guessing that 6 is bad SNR, would this be the reason normal ADSL was fine, and as soon as I went on to ADSL 2 I started having issues?

6db is very good SNR that is where many would love to be but can't due to BT's copper wire.

ADSL2 is more picky than ADSL1 noise can cause drops but SNR 6 would mean no noise unless this is jumping around and is higher when you have drops.
If you go FTTC then when ordering inform them that the master is not in a suitable place and will need the engineer to use the extension kit provided.

Hi Old Dude. Did you ever solve this? I've encountered the same problem. Everything works apart from actually downloading from the play store. WEIRD!!!
