Jeremy Chelot Interview: 8000 Mb

Seems rather competitive considering Zzoomm charged that for 2Gb previously. Makes me think their 2Gb plan won't be more than £45.

Would seem like he might have some mad plan to bring together the top AltNets into 1 infrastructure provider

Great interview and it's a great price. Community Fibre had their 3Gb at £99/m for some time until it was "discounted" to the current price of £49. So I think it sets a nice ceiling by which other Altnets need to be measured. One thing is that it seems to be that they also need another price point at £ 49.99 so will they add a 2-4Gb product too?

These are products launched to enable press releases, and to back up claims about having the fastest broadband service - something for the technical department to prove it can be done, and for the marketing team to make a lot of noise about.

I'd be amazed if the median customer of the Community Fibre 3Gbps service has a 95th percentile usage above 50Mbps.

I'm not one of the "who on earth needs a symmetric 1Gb service, my FTTC is plenty" crowd, but currently 8Gb is something that a household is going to struggle to use. It also becomes quite important that the ISP treats peering properly - I'd rather have a symmetric 300Mbps with good peering than 8Gbps that sends everything out via Cogent and HE transit.

apart from the fact the 10Gbe kit is still extremely expensive compared to 2.5Gbe or 5Gbe kit

i would get 8gbps plan if YF were in LDN...

Yes, they plan on launching a 2Gb package as well. Didn't get confirmation on pricing but would suspect it to be around £45

An excellent interview. 👍

Clearly Jeremy and his team are doing something right if they are now the fourth / fifth largest Altnet and can build FTTP networks in all four countries of the Union and do so whilst making money with a 15% take-up rate.

That is some impressive cost efficiency and scaling for a small player.

Sounds to me like the best use of PIA there is, really. I wouldn't be surprised to see some OFCOM back slapping saying how the PIA product has basically given them their business.

My only concern with their model is not having their own FEX's - I haven't seen anything to say if they'll change that in the future but my only concerns of running things from BT exchanges comes from what happens when BT starts trying to close them off ASAP, the scale BT has, if they give 6 months warning on 40 sites for example, will they be able to rip/replace to keep up?

Any thoughts on 8000 Mbit/s symmetrical for £99.99 a month or on any of his other comments?
Gimmie! :D

Providing the network is in a similar ballpark to BT for me now in terms of latency/reliability, I'll be picking it up and replacing VM and BT with Youfibre. Netomnia are working their way across town currently, though started at a different end to me :( - Virgin have already been given marching orders :P

BT need exchanges for their own FTTP network, so I would imagine that Netomnia are putting their kit into the exchanges that are sticking around. It's the same approach Lit are taking, from what I've been told. I feel a bit safer knowing that the other end of my PON link is in a nice climate controlled building on the 2nd floor rather than a street cabinet.

Jeremy has said on his Twitter page here after the Zen interview that they intend to launch 2Gb but not 5Gb. So it would appear their plans will be 1Gb, 2Gb and 8Gb for the time being.

Yep :) and I agree with the climate controlled building too - however do BT even know what's closing? I know they've announced 100 sites to go but there's a lot of sites to go.

Good to hear lit are doing similar, as they're currently on the way to the other halves property :D

I assume they aren't building FTTP headends in buildings that they only plan to occupy for five years.

It is exciting, but please forgive me for still waiting for 1000/1000. Still yet to experience FTTP at all.

I'm in the same boat. Im patiently waiting for youfibre. I signed up for 1000/1000 a very long time ago. Cables were run a very long time ago (13 months now). Still waiting. I hope they arrive soon. I've gone all my life without fibre and im excited that now i'm an old man I might actually get to see it soon.

What an absolutely brilliant interview. I couldn’t help be in awe of both his technical and business acumen. It’s clear to see that his thought process is right on the money and he’s doing this smart and sensibly.

As someone moving to a non-fibre served area, I hope one day I am served by Netomnia (they’re nearby!) or one of the consolidated providers that Jeremy ends up running. More power to him.

As for BDUK, it is a controversial view but one that makes entire sense to me. He’s bang on that you need the pockets to form before you define where the pockets are. Despite all the altnets, we’re still in the fairly early stages of fibre deployment.

Same for me - I'm really happy with my 300/300 (actually 300/900 at the moment due to a quirk) with Zen's excellent peering. They use a lot of Arelion (better known under its old name Telia).
