Jersey and Guernsey

5G is probably the worst technology to deploy in a sparsely populated island. I doubt the NIMBY's will allow all the cell towers you are going to need for good coverage. 4G would be much better as it you can cover much bigger areas with a single cell tower.

5G has the same reach as 4G, it all depends on the bands networks decide to use.
  • If you go for speed = need higher bands = shorter range = more cell towers needed.
  • If you go for coverage = lower bands = longer range = slower, but less cell towers needed.
The reason the early 5G in the UK had short range is because everyone was using band n78. It's fast, but short range. There's already 5G over n28, which reaches as far and is as slow as 4G over B20. Some networks are even deploying 5G on the same bands used for 4G.

I'd be very surprised if they deployed 5G n78 everywhere in Jersey and Guernsey. It will be like their 4G deployment.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that 5G could run on bands used by 4G. Now it makes sense but still when they say "5G" it's imposible to know what exactly they mean.

It is a bit crude this as we don't have an indication of the period over which £80 million is to be spent in Jersey, but I wondered how it compared to other locations for spend per head of the population ? The latter is roughly 100,000, so that's a spend of circa £800 per head.

I know from another source that two of the drivers for this are the banking and financial services industry and the tourism sector.

I don't think the NIMBY problem will be any worse in Jersey than anywhere else. In fact, due to its relative isolation, folks might actually realise how useful a robust 5G network is !
