Mobile phone operator O2, owned by Spain's Telefonica, has won the exclusive contract to sell Apple's much-hyped iPhone in the UK.

The phones will be sold in O2, Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores from 9 November costing £269 including VAT.

"We are coming to the UK and wanted to pick the best carrier and that is O2," Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said at a news conference in London.

Users will get free use of 7,500 wi-fi hotspots giving faster internet access.

It has not yet been announced on what terms O2 won the contract.

Customers have to sign up for an 18-month contract on a tariff of £35, £45 or £55 a m

I don't think I'm a potential customer for this. I paid £20 for my phone and barely use it with PAYG. There was also recently a case of someone who had bills of many thousands of dollars when his iPhone made automated calls to check his e-mail while he was roaming abroad even though he thought it was switched off.

What annoys me is that the iphone has been called a smartphone by many. Its nothing of the sort!

While its certainly not my cup of tea, I cant knock it because I havent used one.

While there are a lot of things it really should have had (3G, mms, custom ringtones etc), its still a usable phone.

It settles in the 'Ive got this phone to be cool' niche, and nowhere else. The price is one of the main factors which puts it firmly in that category.

That is an astonishing price for a high priced contract lasting 18 months. The new 8GB N95 wont even be near that.

And most phones that use micro SD can have 6GB of expandable memory now. 8GB is rumoured to be released very soon. I have 4GB as it is on my card.

I think I'll stick with my cheaper 6110, with GPS, 3.5G, choice of literally 1000s of apps, custom ringtones, mms, bluetooth file transfer, removable battery, decent 2MP camera with flash, and lots more besides.

It all seems very expensive to me (well the contract does). Then there's the soldered in battery so you have to send your phone away to replace it ...

Still waiting for my Eten X800, now that's a real business smartphone :) , though it still can't fly me to the moon.

Didn't want one in the first place - it seems to be the most overhyped piece of consumer electronics since the PS3.

I'll stick with my Nokia N73 - it can be a bit slow at times, but it does what I want it to do - as far as I can tell the only advantages the Iphone has are the UI and the styling.

It can't run TomTom, no 3G and it's bloody expensive (both initial purchase price and the monthly contract) - no way will I have an Iphone.

Got to admit the styling is good though.

moed from nokia to ornage smart phone and this i have had for a few weeks so far can't fault it. :P

Old Dude - the Nokia you linked to just looks like any other phone to me. That isn't meant as a criticism - I couldn't care less what my phone looks like (the N73 is pretty bland too).

I won't touch Motorola's either, thanks to owning one that was about as reliable as Fast4 and Itscrapi, then having to return it regulalry and arguing with Motorla's customer support team for months on end.

I've had Nokias and Sony Ericssons since then, pretty happily. Plus a Samsung, which was okay, but had a couple of minor bugs.

We have 2 in the family my daughter uses hers more than I do and had no issues at all.She has been using it for about a month now I have had mine a week.
