Joost - Bandwidth sponge...

I got an email today from Joost inviting me to be a beta tester, so I though i would give it a whirl.

I noticed straight away that the amount of bandwidth this thing uses is HUGE as the picture quality is much better than the likes of Youtube, though still not brilliant.

My AOL connection is throttled at peak times so this makes Joost pretty much unusable at 300kbps, i havent tried it unthrottled yet, but im sure my meger 1mb connection will still struggle at full speed.

If this thing takes off, I can imagine a lot more broadband subscribers falling foul of the various fair use policies that are lurking out there.

When I get unthrottled ill set up a bandwidth meter and see how much this thing uses in say, 1 hour...

Joost's just added a whole buch of new channels so there's even more of an excuse to burn your d/l allocation. It also uses a P2P system to move content, so your connection is hammered both down and up!

Be aware that if you have a low gb limit, you'll run through it very, very quickly...

[EDIT] Joost have just updated the software to 0.9.2 to fix some of the crash / stuttering issues.

I been using it for a while with out any issues, I got 2 invites any one wants it pm the email address

I just used Joost for 1 hour and it clocked up 380mb. My Unthrottled 1mb connection couldn't actually keep up, so I suspect that it would have been much more for a 2mb+ user.

UK ISPs are going to love this...

If this thing takes off, then you can expect TV and Movie companies to do similar things, then what ISPs like to call "heavy usage" will become normal usage.

BTW: To all those who asked for invites, apparently you have to earn them by using Joost, which to be honest, I don't plan to do very much...

Ok it's started working now, I did send the invites to all who pmed me your email addresses, no more left :(

yep very impressive im in another country right now where the broadband is alot less stingy so i wont fall foul of any fup.

the picture quality doesnt seem as good as iptv (which is being trialed in hong kong) so i doubt it will be used much in the living room tv but good for the typical desktop. very polished interface as well, after spending months on the rather utilitarian looking linux programs its nice to start using an application with flashy animations and moving menu objects that fade in and out of view. same sort of feeling when you use wmp11. nice selection of channels for a beta product.

btw since i ll probably be using this quite a bit over the next few weeks i should have a few invites if anyone wants any pm me your email address.

lol would appreciate an invite if someone has any :p please drop me a pm if anyone has any (dont wanna pester anyone for one) would appreciate it none the less.

You don't need an invite any more. As of yesterday, you just go to the joost site, click the beta tab at the top, and it lets you download it and register as a user.

And it seems to have started working again last night, tho I've not tried it again this morning. Presumably they had trouble coping with the rush of new users.

nope... l click the Joost Beta tab and it shows me the below

Hello! Before you can sign in and download Joost, you need an invitation from another user.

Sorry about that!
I got an email yesterday with a link in it and didn't read it properly.

Here is the email.
Try the link and see if it works.

The waiting's over! Since we received your application to join the Joost
beta test program, we've been very busy fine-tuning it for you.

So here's some good news: we're now ready to expand our beta test
program, and we're delighted to invite you to join us.

You can download the Joost software right away, by clicking on the link
below. You'll find instructions for installing and running the software
on our download pages.

Get Joost here: https://www.joost.com/download/JxuYkUSOUtoi.zkuNOqLhM.html

Before you can watch Joost for the first time, you need to choose a
username and password. We've provided instructions for doing this on the
screens you'll see the first time you run the software.

well the link works and l downloaded it however l need to be sent an invitation or as the program says "please use the email the invitation was sent to" in short all l can use atm is the program however l need an invite to my email works when making an account... either than or to use the email you had it sent to and change it after... thats unless the invite has already been used...

timeless
I used somebody else's link and just put in one of my own email addresses and it worked, so I assumed you could just use any email address.

If that doesn't work, I've got one of those links I haven't used somewhere so I'll PM you the email address and you can put it in and then change it.

Let me know.

that would work, l just hope they dont do some kind of click this link to validate thing :D however ld appreciate it very much.
