Just had 3Gb installed but....

Hi all,

I've had 3gb installed this morning but I'm not getting 3gb.

The installers have installed a Technicolor FGA5330CFL and an Adtran.

I'm using a Mac Book Pro with a Solo 10G and these are the speeds I'm getting:

The modem took ages to connect and the installers didn't have anything to test the speeds with. Am I meant to be getting closer to 3gb speeds? I've been told to wait for a few hours for the speeds to settle.

I sounds to me that the adapter is syncing at 2.5Gbe not 10Gbe. And yes you should be getting over 3Gb speeds. External adapters are a hit and miss, many don't work at the advertised speeds. Even with a 10Gbe switch sometimes you need to tweak settings to achieve full speeds. I have a MacMini M2 with a 10Gbe onboard port and I am able to get 10Gbe speeds (9.4gb) using iperf3 internally. I suggest you first try your adapter internally to confirm it can push 10Gbe speeds. Also check the Ethernet => Details => Hardware to confirm at what speed is it syncing and if it is using full duplex. I had mine in Automatic and it's wasn't always working at full 10Gbe speed so I switched to manual. Under Full Duplex try enabling Flow Control.

I would try another adaptor...when had i 1gb installed from CF i was only getting 650Mb over a thunderbolt 4 dongle which had 1gb ethernet and a few usb 3 ports. I bought another one from another brand and was getting 940 down and up.

The guys said they had never installed a 3gb connection and were in a rush to get to the next job.

I've noticed the Adtran ONT is the SDX631q XGS 2.5GBE.

According to the specs it only does 2.5GB

PS. I'm not network savvy.
Good find, that's the issue. They should have left you a 10Gbe Adtran I am afraid. Talk to customer services but be prepared for some delays, they struggle with "non standard" requests and 10Gbe hardware is hard to get for them. I suggest you take it easy and try to have them credit the time you are not getting the service you paid for. Mind you the difference between 2.35Gb and 3Gb is not that much is still not what was contracted.

For someone not network savvy that's a great spot to be fair!

As Greenlantern suggests it should be an easy fix for CF albeit maybe not a timely fix.

100% agree with you, I'm over the moon with what I'm getting. My previous supplier BT, I was getting 50Mb on a good day.

I'll contact them and see what they say.

Thanks mate, I've been reading up on Fibre on this site for a week and trying to learn as much as possible prior to the install.

Bit pee'd with myself that I didn't spot the wrong Adtran before the installers left.

Hindsight is always 20/20, isn't it? If you're anything like me you were probably just relieved to be getting it installed and assumed the installer was on the ball.

All being well you'll be updating us soon telling us it's been resolved :)

It's good to know this as my 3Gb is going to be installed at the end of this month. Will keep a look out for the model number if they try to install the same one.

It all depends on how you want to play it. You should be able to get credit for the lack of proper 3Gb service so it could be a positive not a negative. Also I presume you guys just missed the 3Gb price increase to £ 56 and you won't be affected by the just announced mid-contract increase for 2024.

So I called up tech support yesterday evening and was a bit puzzled with the answer I got regarding the 2.5Gb Adtran ONT.

I was told that ALL packages inc 3Gb get the 2.5Gb Adtran ONT and it's the router that determines what speed you get, and to wait 24 hours for my speed to stabilise.

Well, it will be 24 hours at 10am today, pretty sure I'll be phoning them back again.

thats clearly a lie, how you they expect you to get 3gbps with a 2.5 port on the ONT lol

Yup, I didn't want to argue with her, so I'm hoping I get someone more clued up today.
I'd try once more and if that is met with the same bizarre response I'd try the social media angle (IMO they have better-trained staff to deal with DM on Twitter/X for example) or failing that an email to the CEO (which will be intercepted by a dedicated team) always tends to work wonders.

As others have said, well done for spotting this.

Not a lot more to add other than you've basically been mis-sold the product. Your ONT will never allow you to receive the speeds you're contracted for.

What worries me is if this will become a regular tactic and T&Cs will be updated to reflect an "average attainable speed" of the 2.5GB throughput. I'm sure that'd be illegal but I've seen worse things happen...

So what exactly is the point of a 3Gb package when the ONT is limited to 2.5Gbps? That seems a bit silly.
