Keep losing dial-up connection

A friend asked me to help with her PC dial-up problem and, despite the fact I have a Mac and broadband, I tried (unsuccessfully).

Her problem is that whenever she tries to check mail or even delete mail in Outlook Express, she loses connection and a box pops up saying it's connecting to the Internet. She also loses connection when trying to go to a new site with Internet Explorer, but this isn't so consistent.

I've tried dialling to another ISP and unchecking the 'connect automatically' button and tomorrow I'm going to try with an external modem, but I'm out of my depth. Can anyone help me?

Her computer is a 5-year old Hewlett-Packard running (I think) Windows 98 and she uses Wanadoo pay per minute.

make sure that she doesnt have the box 'Hang up after sending or recieving' checked, found in Tools>Options>Connections

Another thing to check, is Tools>Accounts and make sure that the connection of every email account is set to 'Any Available'

hope this helps

Your using wanadoo, theres your problem, worked for them for a long time, their shocking. if you get no luck on here, call narrowband support and ask to speak to team leader lee (he works on cancellations). he should help quite a bit.

If i remember rightly from my old days of payg dial up there is a service level agreement and that you should have more or less 100% up time with you paying for the call, i would get onto wanadoo about it and ask them for the radius logs on this connection and any possible disconnection reasons.

Also did any software get added prior to the problem as this could point at your issue.

Like the others have said make sure that the box isnt ticked in the mail program saying disconnect when recieved or sent mail.

I've just been round to my friend's house armed with your suggestions, MrJ, and found the 'Hang up' button was checked. I unchecked it and all is well again. Thank you. And thanks too for the other replies, which I only saw after the problem was fixed.
