Kit recommendation for Rural East Yorkshire

If you're going down the LPDA route, for 5G reception I'd recommend the Iskra P-62 variant as it has higher gain at n78 frequencies (~10dB), but still receives the lower (~800MHz) frequecies even though datasheet shows gain drop off at around 1500MHz. I get reasonable 5G signal in the loft with the 5103e even though the P-62 has 10m of cable, which is WL240 Accordia Vector .

How many lpda antennas do you have, 4?

Been testing with just two. The 5103E works with just two on the two main ports. More recently been testing a Poynting XPOL-24 across all four ports also. XPOL-24 seems have a very slighly worse n78 reception in the loft as the P-62's but perhaps is more picky on beam width or the cables I'm using with it... or the fact I'm using all four ports.

Regarding the wife factor.. mine says she's ok with 4 x LPDAs, but is it worse with those or a big white box that stands out quite obviously. 🤔 issue for me is with mounting two sets of LPDAs would be an issue if I pointed towards the three/EE mast due to the orientation of the house with regards to roof mounting points.. they'd have to be all four stacked ontop of each other, but pointing to Vodafone 15 degrees further round which is perpendicular to house means one could have two poles of two each which would be more acceptable.

Might an omni be better that way you can swap networks and aren't left with a directional antenna pointing at one mast? Of course I don't suppose it's that difficult to reorient an antenna on a static caravan. Just a thought.

Btw we're slowly approaching Starlink £€$ teritorry with all these antennas and such. Might be worth waiting for another of those rural offers.

I have a feeling that the antenna wires will introduce more interference at that length rather than helping anything. It may be worth just trying the Zyxel/Three router and seeing how it performs as is.

Most of the antennas seem to be snake oil and even at weak signal, 5G can perform very favourably. Of course the upload speeds will be a bit rubbish until 5G SA is fully rolled out.
Unlikely - even at 10m, LMR240 has a loss of around 3db in the 1800Mhz region, giving 6-7dB of gain which is still much more than an Omni would give.

In fact, an omni at that range will likely have more interference and a much noise ratio severely hindering performance - at least with a directional you've got better odds of improved performance.

I can also confirm Iskra's are not snake oil and work well.

Not going to get P62's before the weekend but it is a fair shout, they are newer with slightly better performance at N78 end.

True - but monthly running costs will be significantly less and with Bellend-Musk regularly changing the services, you just don't know what you're going to get 6 months down the line.

Whatever tickles your fancy I guess

I can second that about the iskra's

I can confirm that antenna's are not just snake oil because without I have emerency calls only inside and outside of my properity from all of the big 4 providers
the panorama panel antenna has a max of 9dBi and min of 6.5 and a cable length of 6.5m
the Iskra has a nice flat curve of 9.5dBi at the lower 800MHz going to 10 very quickly and peaking at 11.5dBi across it's spectrum
both options cover 5G 3-4GHz spectrum

The only tower I have in my area which I connect to is 4miles away and covered by very tall hills, feilds and trees with no clear line of sight, I've tested higher up on the roof of the house but my best signal is lower down below the first drain pipe because i'm clearly picking up reflections.

Get a parabolic and place the Panorama in it. :D

Quick update on the NR5103E and thanks for all the help and recommendations so far.

So I didn’t get chance to check permissions for an aerial, but I got the router from eBay and for a ‘grade C’, it’s immaculate!

I plugged it in, stuck my giffgaff sim in it (as we’ve still got unlimited data on there for now) and we’re getting ‘good’ sometimes ‘excellent’ signal with the internal internal. The external antennas supplied have, so far made little difference, and we are connected to a mast (assuming I’m using cellmapper right), about 3 miles away to the north west. Speeds aren’t full 4G but they’re significantly better than the old TP-Link router. (About 10Meg down and 8Meg up)

I’m trying different locations around the caravan but it seems that the corner that’s on the right compass heading toward those masts is the best spot. I’m also going to try 5G only mode to see if I can force it to another mast, as well as sticking the Smarty SIM in it when this credit expires. Then the big antenna if I get permission!

To be expected really with giffgaff. You'll only likely get Band 20 in your are from O2 networks - external antennas will make little difference with B20 other than improving upload and improving noise from from other masts.

Remove B20 from the band list and I guarantee you'll lose connection.

Might be wise to test that that when testing the SMARTY SIM otherwise you will likely pick up nearby masts that don't offer much.

It's when you test the SMARTY SIM is when the real fun starts.

By the way, use the top port, and third port down for main external antennas on the NR5103E.

I just did that and that totally happened. I'll pop the Smarty SIM in tomorrow (we've got enough connection for watching Netflix as there's a huge storm outside) and see what I can receive.

Is there somewhere I can learn how to read the output from Cellmapper and have a bit more clue?

I've found the best signal with my Giffgaff SIM pointing 318degrees NW propped up to window height but I'm looking forward to trying the other SIM and seeing if I can get something better :)
