  • 15 July 2024 -Unfortunately I appear to have managed to kill theforum.
Which in turn powers the from page of the site.

I was attempting to update a few things on the forum before attempting to get out of the utf8 failure that occured during migration. I do apologise, Im at my wits end with this . My hosts were supposed to have migrated everything across, but there are so many things that need fixing I was just totally overwhelmed. I think the crash may have occured due to the server doing one of its horrid slow phases at 5am whilst I was trying to install something. Ive not been able to back out and Im not sure if the backup I did before I started is anyuse because of all the changes I have made.

It was midly amusing to see Vidahost mentioned in the left of this old style template. Oh I so wish Vidahost was still around and hadnt been bought out by GoDaddy

Hope they have backups and can recreate the old environment.
Wonder if his utf8 issues are related to Mysql changing defaults for utf8 encoding switching from utf8mb3 to utf8mb4. This could hit someone moving from Mysql 5 to 8.

PS: I'm sure there are many technical people in that community to help her get uncopulated.

Also found them on https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=589301.0

It appears they have an old SMF version which requires PHP 7.4 but mistakenly added a mod which requires 8.0+ resulting in the broken state.

It sounds like they have an original backup so that's good news, I'd probably restore that rather than try to manually remove the mod.
Oh blimey.. Hope it's not MS. :(

Usually the database import should automatically handle conversions, like changes to the utf8 encoding. I only ever found that to be a bit more awkward when needing to downgrade to an older MySQL version, as you had to manually edit the big .SQL file to change the encoding on tables with a find and replace. But I don't know much about the SMF system they use or its history (I think I tried it once many moons ago but didn't like it).

The Kitz forum is very quiet now though, I think its had its day. The more people that move to Fibre, the less need for forums like the Kitz forum where people swapped tips on sync rates and what modems worked best or how to adjust SNR targets. It started going quieter as more people moved to FTTC, then has just got quieter still as people move to FTTP.

I would agree with the sentiment above. While Kitz is obviously a very important forum in the UK, ultimately a lot of the information it has on its web pages [outside of the forum] is slowly becoming irrelevant, other than being a historical artifact of how the broadband network developed in the country.

Even the limited information shared on the site about FTTP is also slowly going out of date, by claiming the maximum speed is 330/50 [which it hasn’t been for a while now] and makes no mention of the commercial rollouts being undertaken by Openreach and many altnets. It also talks widely about the original Huawei ONT which came with a BBU, which is no longer useful as BBU’s aren’t provided in most cases [esp since FVA doesn’t exist as a product in the ONT either].

The information the site has was good to read to undersrand how the original BT packages came into existence for ADSL1, ADSL Max and then ADSL2+, as well as on the early FTTC rollout. But as we move towards full fibre connections for everyone [eventually], all the information there is largely going to become useless.

It would make more sense for kitz to come to a natural close rather than being revived, with the activity transferring to places like think broadband or even here, where the information is somewhat more up-to-date. 👍👍

kitz was great back in the day. i found them when i was hacking my openreach modem. it did seem to be extremely specific on what they talked about. which is why it's nice to cover a wide range of things. But i'm also kinda surprised that they weren't taking daily backups and also testing those backups. I run a small website (business related) and that entire thing is backed up. Database, website files, configs, OS, everything. Hopefully they can sort it out, but i've also not been visiting them regularly for a while now.

Yes, the passing of burakkucat hasn't helped matters.
