Konfabulous ?

Ever since Apple did the dirty on Konfabulator (groovy desktop widgets if you're not familiar with it) the future has not looked that bright for the developers; until now ! Yahoo ! has purchased the company and they'll probably be used on more Windows desktops than they could ever hope for on the Mac.

Let's just get this out of the way... Konfabulator is now free. Yup. If you download version 2.1 you know what you'll never ever see? That's right a registration reminder. Fear not, there's nothing sneaky in there, no spyware, no ads, nothing that's keeping track of information and sending it to us... it's pure, uncut Konfabulator goodness.

...

Another reason we're excited about it, is the very cool big picture. See, when we first thought of Konfabulator, one of the key pieces was accessing internet content. Well guess what Yahoo has boat-loads of? Yup. And what's really great is that they're starting to open it up to everyone in a format that's useable outside the traditional browser, as XML feeds. Guess how they're going to provide real-world examples of how to use this stuff. Yup... Konfabulator. So really, depending on how you look at it, we're taking over Yahoo! We're going to make it so the best way to access their data is via slick little Widgets.

Take a look at the widgets for yourself - there are over 600 of them so there should be something for everybody - and no doubt lots more to come via the Yahoo ! connection. :)

Or perhaps not....200mb of memory needed just to run the default widgets?

The register questions the reasons behind the purchase....

At the moment I can't find anything definitive on Konfabulator memory usage, at least nothing in the 200 MB range. Perhaps that figure comes from an earlier Register article - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/10/windows_konfabulator/ ?

...Critics say that although Konfabulator is eye-catching, its memory usage is somewhat inefficient. Some users claim it uses 6-10 MB of memory for every widget, a fully loaded widget desktop takes 200 MB of memory,

So I suppose the answer is to only load the widgets you need ? :)
