landline handset that uses sim card

My elderly parents have for reasons of economy had their landline disconnected and are now using a pay as you go mobile.

This would be fine except that they cannot master use of the handset/buttons etc,

The ideal solution would be a telephone that uses a sim card and looks like a landline phone i.e a handset connected to a base.

If anybody knows of such a device I would be obliged for the info.

I believe there were a lot of those about in the 1980's hehe :) .

Speaking seriously, I can understand what you're looking for quite well as my elderly mother has similar problems with mobiles, small buttons and confusing menu systems. I did spend a long time looking for exactly this solution (back in 2007/8) and found nothing except the BT Fusion system, which wouldn't suit your situation or mine.

I think there are some other similar systems around but they are usually designed to combine land and mobile services rather than to act as a mobile replacement. There simply isn't enough demand for that sort of product so they don't make it.

Have you considered something like this as a better option - basically a mobile with big buttons and simple display:

I did see a bizarre item on TV a few years back, about someone converting and selling (no doubt at some expense) antique corded phones to work on the mobile network! They also did a converted Brick mobile which was supposedly 'popular'.

Maplin do various big button mobiles :- http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=260922

My mum often managed to turn her mobiles off when trying to answer a call, and always had trouble with the keylock buttons, so I got her a clamshell so she just has to open and close the phone - the buttons are better spaced on clamshells too.

My mother doesn't believe in key-lock so it's not uncommon for me to recieve calls from her handbag, there's rustling sounds and I hear a lot of background noise and chatter. It's a bit like trying to get to sleep in a town house on Friday night :) .

Get her a Samsung B2100, the keylock feature cannot be turned off and engages after 5 seconds of inactivity!!
