Laptop problems

Me again :(, with another technical problem- possibly hardware fault.

I bought an Asus laptop 5 months ago and this morning whe i turned it on, the screen seems strange. On the windows xp boot screen it flashes red, and then when it has logged on, the corners of the screen appear to be purpley and flashing very quickly. The place where the battery shows how much is remaining appears purple instead of the colour it normally is.

I've run the virus checker and spy bot but nothing wrong there, any suggestions? Please help!

Thanks,

Nick

Sounds like the screen has gone, esp where you described the purple bits.

You have 2 years garentee (under some EU law, not just a year as most beleive) so 5 months shouldnt be any problem at all.

Ring Asus or wherever you got it from. You need a replacment, or they might want to fix it.

Suppose you could run a "live CD" typically Linux, or attach an external monitor and switch from onboard display to monitor both of which could rule out software error ... :hrmph:

EDIT: As Old Dude points out, it doesn't sound good. Had a problem with my laptop backlight and HP sent a courier around next day to collect it for repair. Arrived back working little more than a day later. :)

Hi Nick

Have you tried booting the laptop into safemode? To do this you press the F8 key while on boot.

This will load basic drivers, if the screen is still showing the same quirks in safemode then the problem is more than likely hardware.

thanks for the advice old dude, this forum is so helpful :)

I tried starting it in safe mode even bt same problem, and the screen saver is weird acting with the purple bits showing on it). It's under warranty with the firm so should be ok, just backing the bits up off it now.

thanks again :)

Good idea, although they fixed my backlight they also reformatted and reinstalled Windows for me as well ...

Remember to back up your favourites, nothing so annoying as no longer have quick access to the common haunts.
particularly ispreview.co.uk ;)

thanks again guys. I'm just fortunate that I have the time to back it up.

It's not really good enough that for a pretty new laptop that someone goes wrong with it this soon. Lucky it is in warranty. I'm hoping I get a new laptop as then can start a fresh with the components :)

Might actually be better to get a repaired one, esp if its a fault thats common on that. Might be worth whacking the model no. into google, and adding 'faults' or something. See what it comes up with in forums.

asus laptop

You haven't by any chance had a STRONG magnetic field near the display ?
Sounds like the old problem with CRTs which needed degaussing.

LCD's are not prone to this magnetic problem.. so cant be that

I haven't had it anywhere unusual, it's been in the normal places (front room sitting down, at work) It hasn't received a bang either to damage it.
The interesting thing now though is that it has stopped. Only VERY intermittantly now (it's been on for 4 hours and only twice when it was permanent this morning). Not sure whether these things can get better :s

I'll keep a really close eye on it today and see what happens, so far no problems. It could be some sort of interference from the house next door- they did have building work yesterday. Perhaps something messed the screen up. If I montior for a month, it will still be in warranty as new, but if it does it again I'll take it straight back. :)
