latency on virgin media cable service

Hi guys,

I was wondering how does virgin compare to other broadband services on the latency side? I used FTTP in my last property and it was damn good, would normally get under 3ms anywhere. Then I moved to FTTC area where first latency was good but very unstable, getting pings around 5-9ms, and after they moved me to another DSLAM card to lower the instability with my line my pings have increased to 15-18ms.

I was wondering how is virgin media like in this aspect to compare

Thanks!

Ofcom's speeds report actually gives quite a useful overview of this, although generally they're a bit worse than FTTC. However this may well be different on Virgin's FTTP lines and it will improve when DOCSIS 3.1 goes live.

Alex, I've got both BT FTCC (80/20 sync) and a VM 350 connection coming into my property. Although ovbiously much faster I still find myself using the BT connection more and it feels more responsive than the cable one.

It was over a year ago, but I am sure I saw a lot of complaints about latency and other issues with the Virgin cable service in the months after they upped everyones speeds.

Yeh a year or so ago it was horrific. The last few months and weeks it's been a lot better (round here anyway). The lump of junk (superhub) they expect customers to use just makes the situation worse. Best thing I ever did was out it in modem mode.

Yep I do the same, got a draytek 130 as VDSL modem, pfsense sg-1000 as firewall and a unifi ap-ac-pro for wireless. full control of network

Is the virgin media with a BT open reach connection FTTC just a re-badged BT connection as per post office internet OR would your internet traffic get routed via the Virgin media core network - VM's infrastructure.

What I'm looking for is the lowest latency ISP, 'the best' for online gaming. BT are suffering from latency big time so I have to avoid BT hardware as much as possible.

Any other suggestion regarding an ISP that's good for gaming, when I say good I'm talking about responsive which may not be totally explainable with pings.

Gaming relies on UDP, if an ISP decides to drop UDP packets randomly - there you have your poor gaming response...

Virgin Media will not work over BT's network it is a completely seperate network, they have never resold BT.
