Less than 300m to cabinet but not able to get g.fast

G.fast has been enabled on my cabinet and is up and live. Using www.dslchecker.bt.com I can see that other properties in my area are able to order g.fast and take advantage of the improved speeds.

I am less than 300m from the cabinet and Openreach have confirmed this. They said my property was 260m from the cabinet. Using online tools that work out distance, I get the same figure give or take by a few metres.

Using the DSL checker, it shows that the maximum observed speed on my broadband circuit is 80/20 which was yesterday. Router stats also show the same.

However when querying with Openreach via their chat service their response was something like:

g.fast is affected by the length of the line and this is why you can't order it. I then queried with them that they previously told me my line length was 260m which is less than the cutoff of 300, and they asked me to submit a question on their website. I strongly believe most of what they were saying was scripted based on the fact the answer was a simple no because computer says so.

I've explained to them why I think they have it wrong which is the fact we were only getting 55Mbps up until 2 weeks ago where a fault was found. When the cabinet was installed they presumably deemed the speed loss to be to great so we were assessed as not being able to get it. I have requested that they re-asses our line as we should now be able to get it but I end up in circles with the same old length of line, routing of cables blah blah jargon which is all wrong.

Anyone had any similar issues but managed to get around them?

Yes same here my next door neighbour can get G.Fast but I can't what is funny the line goes to the center of our properties only 7 inches between them. I failed to get around brick wall comes to mind trying.

When you run your specific address through the BT Wholesale checker, what G.fast speeds are estimated for you line? Specific focus should be on the 'impacted' figures for downstream. If this is below 100Mbps then you'd be under the fault threshold and thus Openreach couldn't sell it to you.

Also remember that G.fast comes from your local PCP cabinet and not the FTTC (VDSL2) cabinet that may have been installed before.

For me the two cabinets are right alongside one another, I live in semi detached homes but they do not have driveways down the side of the property just walkways. This makes the properties closer together.

The facts show this way to increases the speeds was a wast of money since from the cabinet the G.Fast only reaches 18 homes before BT say it is below threshold and on amber. Next door as I said the two telephone lines are just 7 inches apart in center of building they can get it but on amber I cannot even get the amber warning anymore.

The amount of money wasted on G.Fast could have put many still stuck on slowe 20cn or ADSL2+ faster speeds. There are even some that can get FTTC but at speeds below 10meg the money would have been better spent on giving them another cabinet closer to increase their speed.

For me BT lost sight of what was needed for a chepear option that has failed to deliver on expectations.

Estimates do not show for my property but if I put my neighbours in a few doors down it does.

Cabinets are close to each other and the pcp is the closer one so don't think that is the issue

Openreach themselves (engineer and via chat) have both said my line is 260m.

Surely the fact that my router is currently syncing at 80/20 and the line being sub 300m is a good enough indication that with g.fast we would benefit.

Does anyone know if Openreaches systems do a poll on circuits every now and then to see if a property can now benefit from g.fast?

Curious as usually you do tend to see G.fast estimates, even when a bit out of reach, although being a "few doors down" from you could be equal to several tens of metres underground and that could make all the difference with this technology. I assume your neighbour's test was to the same cabinet number and what estimates did they get for G.fast speed (impacted)?

I was a bit vague with my description of how many doors down. 5 doors down in our street can get g.fast and their speeds are:

110

Stats for my broadband are attached below

109

Looks like because the potentially impacted range is below a certain threshold that's why they are not allowing my property to take advantage even though we can clearly benefit as we are not on an impacted circuit and are getting the full 80Mbps.

Shame really as g.fast can clearly benefit a lot more people ultimately across the UK but they are sticking to what estimates show instead of real-world stats.

Would be interesting to know what the full criteria for g.fast is (i.e under 300m, able to get over 100Mbps and range b (impacted) low rate over a certain Mbps figure.

Do you know if there is any news on when they are likely to extend the reach of g.fast over 300m as this might mean we can then be considered for g.fast.

No chance of that!

My g.fast estimate are clean 211-184 / 29-12 and impacted 151-102 / 18-9 with handback 152 / 92

My FTTC is 80/20.

Crazy G.fast are very poor as my cabinet are within 250m away.

Post on ISP Review today which shows potential for extending g.fast further than 300m:

Might mean for those of us currently below 300m, but not able to order g.faat because the speed drop is so high, will eventually be able to place an order

Updated: Seem BTw got it wrong! Why house number 8 are very low than others plus why house number 9 got G.fast but number 10 get no G.fast as house number 9 are very low VDSL Range B (Impacted) at 56! Doesn't make any sense at all Mark Jackson.

Very strange the same layout street (10 houses) all underground connect to the same the pcp cabinet approx 250m away:
