Right, ive got everything set up but my wireless side of things on my dg834n is struggling to keep connection to my room, signal tho good at times just disappears even tho the signal was quite reasonable according to windows so I see no reason for the issues.

so I have decided to use an extension to get the modem closer to myself, basically its a 25m modem cable that I have purchased, if I remember correctly this cable is rj11 I just wanted to know if there would be signifiant speed loss?

Thatll be fine.

Theres pretty much no performance loss in an house when using wired networking, same goes for wired extensions.

Its only in mansions, office buildings, factories that extensions see a performance loss without using some form of buffing hardware.

I would be under the same assumption based on the fact that the extension will go from the wall socket to the modem rather than having connectors in the mix, last time I lost about a meg but there were connectors in the mix.

My router also supports rangemax, wondering if getting a rangemax supported adapter would possibly improve pickup never tried them wondering if someone else has experience with them.

I had a similar problem with my dg834n too, even after I fixed the noise margin problem on my line the routers wireless connection would still appear to cut out. It appeared to fix itself when I wiped my custom firewall rules but still does it now and then, though I'm not sure whether this is a Vista specific issue or not because my XP install doesn't appear to suffer.

However, unlike your problem, my signal was always excellent and never reduced (both router and adapter were Netgear based). The dg834n is an otherwise very good router but its Firewall and Wireless capabilities could do with a bit more work ;). Actually the Firewall implementation on most NetGears could do with some work hehe.

As for wired connections, not all cables are created equal. For example, phone line extension cable and TV Ariel cable suffer a lot from signal degradation but Ethernet LAN cable is actually pretty resilient. I replaced my wireless link with a discreet flat Ethernet cable and ran it under the window, works perfectly despite being quite a distance from my PC.

I still use wireless for portable computers, Smartphone’s and visitors to my home but being a gamer I have a strong aversion to the ping spikes it can produce.
