Line Is Too Long for Fibre

Here goes....

I have been closely watching the Openreach checker to see when fibre would be made available as I am on an EO line. It has been showing as 'in scope' for just shy of 3 years. Today it moved to accepting orders but unfortunately my line is too long to benefit from faster speeds blah, blah, blah

What I don't understand....

The exchange is around 50 metres away (across the road) and and there are 2 cabinets situated just outside. BT wholesale checker confirms (telephone number) that I am connected to that cabinet.

I am currently on ADLS2+ with speeds of around 16Mb down and 1.5Mb up. Router stats showing line attenuation of 6.5db for downstream and noise margin of 6.3db.

My question - are these stats indicative of a long line?

Any help is greatly appreciated :smilet:

Could you post a copy of the routers DSL line stats which shows the Attenuation for up and down stream this will indicate the length of the line.

Line Attenuation 6.5 dB 3.2 dB this is not a long line my auttenuation is around 17 FTTC works for me. You need someone who will challenge BT about the test results, thatwill also work to try and get the move to FTTC. Things can go drastically wrong when BT have wrong details for your line though..

Thank you Kits.

This only confirms how incompetent these people are. I truly get the feeling that someone at their end has paid a contractor and signed off work without checking. Now they are simply being untruthful to cover up the boo boo. The fact a neighbour has fibre only confirms this.
I think a letter to my local councillor, who happens to be SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, may do the trick. Will push my ISP as well.

You could also try contacting Openreach requesting they check your line for FTTC and add into the email a copy of the router DSL status highlighting the Auttention.

I'm currently in contact with Digital Scotland in the hope to get some real answers. I shall be contacting my ISP Andrews and Arnold who have been fantastic over the last year when dealing with Openreach and BT. I am not letting this go considering how close to the cabinet and exchange I am.

The last resort is social media so I have a plan B :)

Andrews and Arnold should be able to get BT to relook at the line, remember to include a copy of the routers DSL line stats to prove the distance the router is seeing on ADSL.

A&A have a great reputation for getting BTOR to sort things out; but if all else fails, order a new line (through A&A*); this should then give you a line BTOR recognises as coming from that nearby cabinet, and allow you to order a fibre package.

*Dont order through BT, they rip you off by marking up the BTOR install price by 200-300%

Hi Captain,

Thanks for the advice.

I have sent AA an email yesterday and will let you gentlemen know how I get on. To be honest I really don't expect anything in my favour.

Hi colleen,

Shaun here is on the case - it looks like an Openreach records database is out of date - Shaun has been in contact with you and will update you again shortly.
