Morning All,

Has anyone managed to get a cable modem going with Linspire? i've tried everything it tells me to do - apaprently linspire is supposed to detect the connection when the e-mail client or webbrowser is open but i just get cannot fine site.

no network adapter is showing in network connections - do i need to enable it after a fresh install? if so how?

thanks for any help given

Well i am using the built in ethernet port - do i need a PCI NIC or should this work?

Can anyone tell me how to get linspire to pick up my cable modem via onboard ethernet? i don't want to go and buy a NIC card unless i have to

thanks

Most distros have something like a hardware browser that should tell you whether the hardware has been recognised. If not a new Linux compatible 10/100 NIC is/was only a couple of quid from ebuyer. :)

hi bob,

they are down the road from me so i might mosey on down there tommorow and buy one.

thanks for the tip :)

You will often have to check the ebuyer user reviews to see whether the card works with Linux (unless it, or the correct chipset is mentioned in the online specs). I was going to provide you with a link to the card I was thinking of but they seem to have pruned the user reviews so Linux isn`t mentioned and I don`t want to mislead you. :(

well i just want to use linspire - i got it free so might aswell give it a try!

I think i have a ethernet card around here somewhere- infact i am sure of it - so if i do i'll try it!

i didn't have one but i am about to go buy one from PCworld - it's a realtek so i know it's a good make and it's about £4

what's the name of the built in ethernet card u have use windows device manager to get the name and search the web to find the linux drivers :)

as windows needs to install drivers from the mobo cd to use these lan ports i suspect linspire would need the same so check the mobo's site for suitable drivers, ditto any other onboard features like SATA

i never thought of that - cheers KDS :)

i have a 3Com 3C910 fast ethernet apparently - not much on the web and i am not a great expert in linux - so unless i buy another NIC i might have to stick with microshite.

thanks - i don't think i have the MB CD - it's a computer i got from a shop - it has restore CD's - i'll just go get a new NIC they are only £3.50

thanks for the info guys - appreciate it ;)

i've seen a cheapy on is pc world component shop - it does say works with windows, unix, linux

remember to have the pc powered on & the ethernet connected to the router & the PC network port & then power the cable modem LAST as this then senses if you are using the ethernet or USB on the modem. It then takes a couple of mins to supply the dhcp address.

This may help..................who knows.

i dont use a router - i just have the cable modem right into the onboard ethernet

thanks ill try that..
