Loaded Latency on Vodafone 4g is shocking, would L2TP help?

Hi guys,

i have voda unlimited 4g sim as i cant get fibre and the speeds are just aboiut ok for needs (20-30mb) the issue comes that the latency will jump from around 40ms to 1000ms when ever someone is downloading anything.

This means you can hardly pull up web pages or anything its like the connection is completely saturated which is not my experience of using Three (awful signal issues now) and normnal FIbre.

would a L2TP service like A&A get around this issue?

It sounds like you would need a router which can do QoS properly. What are you using now?

I doubt l2tp would help.

so i talked to A&A and they said it could help,

Did a quick test when service was working and i was disappointed, it helped but it had cut from 600ms ping (when download from steam running) to 480ms... an improvement but still not useable.

I talked to there customer services and he changed some priority settings with the packets for me and now when im downloading ping is 70ms which is absolutely amazing!

the internet is fully useable now when downloading in the background, where as before it was like slower than dial up speeds.

Great result.

Im just using the VPN settings on huwaei b525 but also have an Archer MR600 i can swap in that has more QOS options.

AAISP is great! Didn't know they can help with this side of things, too.

I'd try the Archer as well, if it works it could save you £10/m.

Yes i already tried the Archer a while back without AAISP and it was the same issues (actually worse performance, hence going back to Huaewi)

im happy that AA has got this usebale now,

im using Voxi £30 unlimited and £10 for AA

I'm glad it works for you.

BTW, Lebara is £25 for the unlimited data sim and is also on the Vodafone network, speeds should be identical to Voxi.
(I got 400Mbps dl going through Slough few weeks ago).

Here's my affiliate link if you decide, you get 50% off and I get something too:

I noticed this on Three myself, I believed it was just a quirk of all 4g that latency always just went "through the roof" as soon as you downloaded anything (regardless of the time of day).

This was one of the key issues of 3's with websites failing to load, if any other device on the network was doing anything remotely intensive. It was like the latency reached a point of diminishing returns where every other device on the network wouldn't get a response, add to this contention and its no wonder it ran out of puff.

While it can be, which is why routers come with QoS configs as far as I know it can happen at any aggregation point upstream with your provider where they also have to 'queue' packets in some way or another.
With mobile networks theres more points than with fixed line... the radios aggregate all the connections from all the users connected to all the cells of the mast. The backhaul aggregates all the radios (and possibly multiple providers) on the mast. The upstream interconnects have to count data use per user for billing/quota purposes.
