LobsterPot & Netscape Messenger

Greetings,

I signed up with LobsterPot - seems to be pretty good so far and as reported here the Nildram new server *is* acessible :-)

We have a PC running Win2K. I have correctly configured Outlook 2000 for email for myself (pitfield@lobstermail.co.uk) - that works fine.

However, my partner uses Netscape Messenger (v4.75) for email instead, and I cannot get it to download email. When I perform a GetMail I get a message box stating:

"The mail server responded:
User unknown.
Please enter a new password."

Now I know the password is correct as I logged on as her using WebMail with no problems. Seems to be a username problem...

I have Messenger configured as follows:

under Edit->Preferences->Mail & Newsgroups->Mail Server, I have a single POP3 email server (pop3.lobsterpot.net.uk) and a username bkraus@lobstermail.co.uk. For outgoing mail I have an SMTP server (smtp.lobsterpot.net.uk) and the same username.

When it asks me for the password it shows the username in the password pop-up box as bkraus@pop3.lobsterpot.net.uk, but this should be bkraus@lobstermail.co.uk - it seems Netscape is re-arranging the username and POP3 server - basically prepending the username@ to the POP3 server name, rather than using the full username that it is given.

With our last ISP this could be fixed by entering the POP3 username as bkraus*blah.co.uk (i.e. an "*" rather than an "@" between username and domain). I tried this with LobsterPot but it still didn't work.

Anybody got any ideas (other than upgrade Messenger or find a better emailer).

Regards.

Nick Pitfield.

Greetings,

Further googling revealed that in fact it's a bug with Netscape v4.x - so I upgraded to v7.0, which seems to work.

Netscape 4 is incredibly slow by todays standards, upgrade to <a href="http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2b/mozilla-win32-1.2b-installer.exe" target="_blank">Mozilla 1.2b</a>

I find it to be a really stable browser, no crashes yet at all, and I have yet to find a web-page that won't format correctly :)

You can use Netscape 7.0, but that is just old mozilla code (1.0 final i think) with some stuff stapled on, and some stuff (ad blocker) removed)

Hope this is of some help...

Shaun :)
