London Underground Cellular Service: Testing/Discussion

As for the assertion that we lie about our coverage, anyone is welcome to report to Ofcom. But this is the kind of nonsense that I was talking about the other day. We know our coverage isn't strong enough, we know we need to do better. But that's not unique to O2. I feel like some people have this strange idea that O2 has 1% coverage of the UK whilst the others are miles ahead. The reality is that to this day, Vodafone and O2 still cover more of the UK than any other operator. So whilst we will do more, I am a bit disappointed at certain people just posting borderline conspiratorial nonsense, I really expected better.
Also, im more than certain that O2s coverage maps are deliberatly misleading due to the following:
- After someone is found to be doing something multiple times, it’s not conspiracy to assume they would do it again, its prediction
- Every O2 5G deployment shows much more coverage than any other providers deployments, EE seems to show just about the right amount while Three seems to show even less than in reality, this will of course vary from bands deployed etc

I’m typing this message in a “strong” O2 5G area, with 1-2 bars 4G, and EE 5G despite no claim of covering the area

Just judging by what it says locally, I reckon it might be underreported.

The coverage looks like it's just a bit over for what N78 would probably be capable of, but N28 could go for miles so I genuinely wonder (I haven't had any 5G experience, or any experience with B28 so I can't really comment). Considering I got B40 from a 5G enabled mast outside my house once, I would certainly think getting N28 would be possible even if coverage maps say no 5G.

I dread to think how bad N28 would be on that mast though, especially earlier today when it was busy.

O2 is definitely heading for another Ofcom fine with their fantasy 5G coverage map
Agreed maps should do better.
I'm in a good 5G area indoors and out according to Vodafone, but in reality not even a whiff of some sad dss, not even endc fake 5g icon.. .. Absolutely no 5G of any kind. Cheeky.

OP updated with current info and map.

Recent updates on Elizabeth line, 4G phone coverage is now live in Paddington, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, and Woolwich stations, completing the rollout to all the new Elizabeth line stations. Work to deliver coverage within the tunnelled sections of the Elizabeth line continues, with the first sections between Bond Street and Liverpool Street expected to get coverage within the coming month.

Tunnels between Euston and Warren Street on the Victoria line, as well as Covent Garden station on the Piccadilly line have also begun receiving mobile coverage. The tunnels between Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly line will go live in the coming weeks.

Yep, noticed this a few days ago when joining the tunnel to Paddington and up to Bond Street too. Haven't really seen it past that. I'll test and see if I have it the whole journey on the way to work today (at least up to Liverpool Street).

Full service from start of Paddington tunnels up to Liverpool Street. Unfortunately, O2 doesn't get any signal on the Whitechapel platform.

All other networks have working 4G at Whitechapel, it's just O2 that doesn't have access for some reason 🤷🏽‍♂️

Had to go to East of Town the other day and only remembered to speedtest between Canary Wharf and Whitechapel and EE via 1p worked well on 5G while on the LizPurp or Elizabeth Line.
