Looking for a new ISP

I've been with Virgin.net for over a year now, and the service just keeps getting worse. I switched to them from Tiscali, because of their draconian anti-P2P measures. Now Virgin have decided to route most of their connections through an American company which throttles Virgin traffic, so playing games online at peak times, a priority for me, is becoming impossible. I'm desperate to get out, but there are too many packages to choose from. Sadly it has to be ADSL broadband, and since my line can only take up to 3mbps I only want an up to 8mbps package anyway, but it seems most ISPs don't even do that anymore. So, can anyone recommend an ISP that is fast 24/7 and most importantly keeps good pings 24/7. I will take a fair usage policy, as long as it's not terrible, but if it were not unlimited broadband, up to 30GB a month would suffice. A final requirement is that it costs under £20 a month. I've been hearing some bad things about the Entanet network recently in terms of gaming and connections, but if that's sorted I would be happy to check out one of their ISPs. The other one I've been eyeing is O2, since their up to 8mbps package is very cheap, but I wonder what it's like for gaming. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I am with Aquiss but on their LLU network I play CS a lot pingsd are a little higher than when I had my connection through entanet. Still gaming is good on a 30 to 40ms ping if you test what LLU providers are available at your exchange if Bulldog is there then you can join aquiss on the LLU.

Sorry, I live in practically the middle of nowhere in Lincolnshire, which is notorious for having crappy broadband coverage. No LLU providers are set up on my exchange, which serves about 3 villages. It has to be ADSL down a BT line.

Firstly, BT themselves are a ripoff, secondly, they are hardly going to recommend me another ISP. Finally, this being a forum about ISPs, doesn't anyone know a thing about ADSL providers???

The packages are sold upto 24meg but not all exchanges are upgraded to deliver 24meg. They can and do cap the speed on upto 8MB and some still do fixed speeds but it now costs more to be fixed.

So any ISP that says upto 24MB this is only if the exchange is upgraded any speed can be set.

I'm sorry, I don't think you understand me. I know what "up to" means. I am on a shitty up to 8mbps broadband connection with Virgin. The reason it is shitty is not because I have slow speeds, it is because my pings are high during most of the day, so I can't play games online. I am looking for a new ISP that can give me good daytime pings, and preferably stable speeds. I CANNOT GET LLU. IT MUST BE ADSL DOWN A BT LINE.

I think you will find it hard to locate a truly good ISP on BT's network with the usage allowance you want for a sub-£20 per month price tag. O2's BT based service isn't as good as their unbundled packages but I've seen some mixed reports about its service quality.

It might be worth trying an Entanet vISP first, such as ADSL24, purely because they operator off a shorter contract period so if you don't like them then you can easily migrate away. Entanet aren't as good as they once were but like all providers, performance varies, so it may be worth a shot as they're still one of the best value BT based ISPs.

Finally, check out IDNet and Zen Internet, they cost a fair bit more for your requirements but they're also well rated as two of the best quality ISPs in the market.

Thanks Mark, for finally answering my question XD. I've been looking at ADSL24 a bit more, and I do like the look of their 30GB package, so I will probably join them, and as you said, it's only a month long contract. The 12 month one is what's holding me back from O2. I've heard Entanet performance isn't so bad now, and their ALT is a little better than it was. Besides, most complaints are for speeds as low as 2mbps, and I can only get 3mbps anyway, so really, it doesn't matter so much.
Thanks for your help Mark.

I was reading a article about ISP's throttling downloads a few days ago... They suggested investing in tour own private VPN... lol not sure how this much would cost but maybe worth a look? Atleast you would get the bandwidth you paid for!

Uhhh VPN requires an internet connection first you know :), I hope we're not going to get links to VPN sites as SPAM next.

brittle

I'm out in the 'sticks' and had troubles with both Virgin and Pipex(after they got bought out a few years back)

I am now with Zen, I pay 25 quid for 25GB p month with extra 1GB available for £1.46) if needed and I do, regularly.

My connection is steady as a rock and stable at 6Mb every day, upload is a bit slow on my line at .35kbps I'm thinking of swapping over to their office service which has 800+ upload and 50GB month priced at £50 ..though it is a lot ...am going to search elsewhere for a better usage limit for _me_

I'm about a mile an a half from the exchange, my service comes down a standard BT line/internal socket etc, sorry I don't play online games but I just pinged google uk site and got pings of 43ms to 47 ms if thats any use to you? not sure who to ping for games but I expect the service for you would be different anyway as its a physically different BT line.

good service with these chaps and its only a 1 month contract so tis ok if it doesn't work out, though the guys at zen will prolly be able to sort most things in my experience , they are pretty good
