Looking for a new isp

I currently work for a small ISP so get free broadband.....so I am looking to move it.

Been doing a bit of research and unfortunately for me my exchange has no LLU providers so I cannot get the better deals.

Any recommendations? I can only get 1.5mb anyway as I am 6.5km from the exchange, even so I can still manage about 50gig is a month. Normally more about 30gig, do it off-peak of course.

So any advise of where to look would be appreciated!

It depends on how much of a risk you want to take with the service quality, the price you pay and what you actually do with the connection.

IDNet will do 40GB for about £17.99 on BT's platform and Zen will do 50GB for £24.99. Eclipse Internet, while not the best performing ISP, can do 50GB for £19.95 and of course PlusNet can do 60GB for £17.99 in Market 3 areas. Some of these will also offer unlimited or more flexible off-peak usage allowances.

Eclipse does tie you down to a 12 month contract though.

I can certainly vouch for Xilo/Uno Broadband. Their service is absolutely excellent & I get the fastest download/upload speeds I've ever had with any ISP (including AAISP & IDnet).

If you can keep to 25GB per month of peak usage, it costs £18.99. 50GB of peak usage costs £25.49. Whichever you go for, you can keep an eye on your daily usage by logging in to "My Xilo".

If you demand the very best & are prepared to pay a small premium for it, look no further. :)

Thanks for the replies.

yeah I don't mind paying the premium costs if their service warrants it, I will take a look.

Is this not offered by your employer?

They seem pretty open minded if they are giving you complete freedom of choice lol

I am leaving the company so need to move my line elsewhere, I just read my first post and I noticed that it was not very clear ;)

Anyone had any experience with Plusnet?

Had a look at Xilo, what concerns me is the lack of support at weekends.

Plusnet seem a bit hit and miss speedwise, I have heard tech support is good, but my parents only get 1.5-2meg from the same exchange as mine; and I get 5.5 (using Vispa); and their house is only 200m-300m from mine and has a brand new BT line.

Well I can assure you from first hand experience that there is excellent out of office hours ticket/email support weekends & bank holidays from Xilo.

That's good to know, but are you not kind of stuffed if your internet goes down? I live in poor mobile reception area so sending emails that way is not going to work.

To be honest that speed difference could be anything, as you will probably already know how BT run their cables is a mystery to us all and that could be why their speeds are poor.

My line has to be with BT at the exchange as there are no LLU providers for me, so I'm thinking the speed part is pretty solid. Not bad considering my line length is over 6km.

We are here, just don't offer phone support. If you do have a fault at the weekends that you're unable to fix yourself via standard checks, it is likely to require BT to look in to.

They don't offer support for standard lines after 8pm on Friday and until 8am on Monday. Even if we did offer phone support at those times, we would only be able to raise a fault for them to still look at it within normal standard fault timescales of 40 hours from 8am on Monday.

Of course, you could upgrade the line to Enhanced care for an additional fee per month and you'll have our out of hours number and we can raise a fault to BT any time, any day of the year.

Hey Matt,

I know that already but appreciate the reply. I understand what your saying about BT and their support during weekends, but still it's nice to be able to speak someone who can run diagnostics tests. Kind of a reassurance :D

I am a UnoBroadband/Xilo subscriber.

I recently suffered sporadic outages due to a problem at the Reading BT Node. I can say from experience that Matt tenaciously worked on my behalf to get BT to successfully sort the problem out. He stayed in regular email contact with me, even during weekends and up to 01:00 AM at night! I usually received his replies within just a few minutes.

Yes, it is unfortunate if broadband is completely lost (say) at 5pm on a Friday, especially if no other means of internet access is available by which a fault report can be logged. That then means waiting until Monday morning before a fault report can be instigated; but in most cases it would make no difference as such faults are usually caused by the BT infrastructure.

Perhaps as UnoBroadband/Xilo grows larger, out-of-hours telephone support will become standard. I personally am quite happy with the current support options as the excellent broadband service & speeds that I receive far outweigh the minor inconvenience of lack-of-included-telephone-support-out-of-office-hours.

AAISP make use of Constant Quality Monitoring (CQM) that, as far as I understand, alerts them immediately to any problems with customer broadband connections. I wonder if UnoBroadband/Xilo have considered using (or are using) that? - Matt?
