looking for new headset (for skype)

l did ask this question over at Ebuyers forum but l guess their staff dont check that forum and the users arent exactly interested in helping.

basically what lm looking for is a good headset for Skype, ideally l would prefer a USB headset as l dislike audio connectors because after a while lf taking in and out the port tends to loose its ability to do its job (l have had it happen in the past where the headphones ports internals messed up had to get a new sound card due to it)

the main thing lm looking for is something with good sound quality and not bulky so when lm on the webcam it doesnt look too noticeable. l also plan to get a Skype subscription but at a later date after lve looked into getting a reasonable set of USB headphones (with a mic attached).

on a final point l would like to say l cant spend allot on this, at most l will stretch to £15.

I'm going to be really unhelpful ... Leo Laporte has revenues of millions of dollars per year podcasting (using Skype). Apparently this is what he gives his guests. Google shopping has prices of around £25-30.

So as I said, given the price you set, I'm being unhelpful - but if Leo is using them they must be pretty good.

l suppose l might be able to strech to £25 but l will take my time in choosing tbh.

l'll definitely look into those, bit more bulky than ld like but l know that for sound quality l'll have to loose the possibility of having something a little less obvious.

l'll read up on them more later, l had a similar pair once which had some crappy button between the headset and speakers which caused me issues, plus it muted everything else apart from what l was doing on skype, however l hope my new set will allow me to just push skype through it without muting my volume through my speakers as l tend to like some music going in the background while lm talking :p.

Ok I guess this isn't quite what you're looking for as it's not USB but I think this is the one I have from Sennheiser:

The USB version is much more expensive:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-166-USB-Over-Head/dp/B000MXLW34

Before I had this headset I'd probably go through one pair each year, with most losing sound quality over time due to EM interference issues and typical electrical damage to the speakers. But this one is not only comfortable but it's also still working after a good two years and has excellent sound quality, albeit a little softer on the bass than others.

I'm not an expert on VOIP or recording, but I do know a decent amount about speakers and headphones. If you're planning on using the headset for anything other than Skype calls (gaming, listening to music etc.) it's worth spending a little more and getting something with bulkier construction and better internal speakers.

Those Sennheisers are a good pick, and so are midrange Sony headphones. Neither are audiophile quality, but they're both good picks for mixing sound quality and compact-ish design.
