Low Latency Broadband

I have been different ISPs ever since I have had internet access at my house (NTL, SKY, VM, BT and PlusNet) I have switched back and forth from them depending on the quality of service that I get or am told I will get. I know NTL are now VM and they have their own network line which differs from SKY, BT, Plusnet etc. I always seem to have gotten different ping times and jitter when I test using CMD or ookla. I have done thorough tests, different times, same servers etc.

I am into heavy gaming so latency is very important. I am looking at IDNet as they say they guarantee low latency as they have different points (which i dont understand) in other countries.

I am looking for opinions from the community if they can direct me to providers who care about their customers who like to game a lot and manage their latency.

I do play with a lot of friends from the US so I know latency will be more due to the distance, but any help will do. Thank you for reading my post.

Latency of course varies due to many factors and most ADSL2+, FTTC or cable providers today should give you a latency (ping) that's broadly enough to game properly, although there are some differences and some providers may give you more flexibility to tweak the line.

So, in terms of quality, I'd suggest checking out page 2 of our best ISPs for 2015 article. Providers like Zen or IDNet etc. are all likely to do a good job.

BT have peak time problems to Valve servers at the moment (TF2, Dota 2 etc.) so stay away from them.
I am currently vpning when playing games to get around it.

Hey,

What games and servers? Also what latency are you wanting/expecting?

I play Battlefield, Call of Duty, Counterstrike and sometimes I play on the Xbox One. I just want a low, consistant ping and also a decent enough ping when playing in servers much further out.

Thanks

Not many studies have been done of latency among the ISPs, but that's largely because it tends to be very similar (though it can differ quite a bit between different connection technologies). A bigger issue is the quality of your home line and connectivity in the local area, which is harder to know.

Ofcom has at least looked at the latency of the big ISPs, which we summarised a little further down in their last quarterly speeds report. But as I say, what you yourself experience may differ as local connectivity issues may vary.

Also, if you can, used a wired and not WiFi local network setup as WiFi will add some latency to your connection (especially if you have any older WiFi kit in your network).
