Lyca Mobile: Suspicious Card Transactions

Has that happened since or were they the only one?
It was a fairly recent thing so nothing since that I know of.

Looking further back into the past though, I seem to remember Ikea's Family Mobile having similar issues. That was another T-Mobile based MVNO who had their own number ranges and I seem to remember things going horribly wrong when they pulled the plug. They had way less customers than Vectone's group of brands and I don't remember it attracting much attention.

For the most part, pretty much everyone else uses number prefixes owned by the big brand they piggyback from so the numbers would be safe. When talking about Lyca though, I am pretty sure they are another brand who have their own prefix range. So the same could happen with them.

Yeah, I think it's currently Lyca, Sky, Spusu and Virgin (or rather O2 eventually) that have their own number ranges at this point since they are/were full MVNOs (with their own IMS systems lol, funny how all of them are the only networks (apart from EE) to have the VoLTE icon too). Could be missing something but a lot of the other MVNOs use the host networks numbering.

Oddly, AA also have their own range too.

So June 1st I crested a virtual card and used it with Lyca....

2nd June I deleted said card.

This morning I'm getting attempted charges from Walmart Canada
Similar here. I created a card on 18th June and boughta Lyca esim just to test for data leaks. Card was frozin straight away and 29th July an attempted transaction was made from Urbanstems. This has been going on for a long time now.

Just had my 4th card compromised.

This was a Barclays debit card - on an account I had which wasn't in use and did not have a card. I got a card issued for it in June and used this to sign up for my replacement account.

Today I had a failed attempt to pay £30 to to O2 (failed because the wrong expiry date was used). This card had ONLY been used for Lyca on the day I received it and then sealed in an envelope.

They want shutting down at this point

I personally want to see criminal charges because they are knowingly continuing to compromise credit cards and personal information.

I am not buying this ‘we are not responsible for a data breach’ bull.

They are either lying, incompetent or both.

I have updated my case with the ico today.

I've had attempts today from FiveBelow in Phillidelphia, Active card check for £0.00.
Not sure how they've still not been investigated over this

I have a friend who still uses Lyca. And hasn’t been able to send or receive texts for about six months - data works. Just.

It needs winding up now enoughs enough.

If the number they are using was originally issued by Lyca they will likely loose all service soon. If the number was ported in then they might be able to escape and port out but as they can't send or receive SMS even porting out is likely going to be difficult.

The winding up was issues on Monday so they've got until the end of the week to respond. There's still a slim chance Lyca will survive this...

Windup order? Where did you see that?

Arh from today - That makes sense why I hadnt seen it yet

Good riddance I say. I wonder where their customers will get transferred to.

They might not get transferred anywhere.

HMRC will sell off all Lyca’s assets, if they have any and customers will need to port away before the company is shut down. Customers are who have a Lyca number could end up with it not working.

I imagine they’ve transferred any assets to offshore holdings or other companies given their ‘complicated structure’ so they won’t be worth a lot. They’ve been running at a loss for a little bit now as well, anyone who would have wanted to buy the operation will rightly be apprehensive.

The only people who’re going to lose is the consumer, fewer companies mean less competition and higher prices!
