mac code issue

i asked for a mac code from wanadoo. i gave it to tiscali and i thought that was that.

however tiscali came back and said that wanadoo has not released the line yet so my tiscali account cant be activated. hence i phoned wanadoo and they told me that as soon as the mac code was given the line was already released.

i was told to phone tiscali back the following day by the tiscalli manager and they would get it sorted out. but guess what... i called the next day which was a saturday and found out that the department is not even opened in the weekends. so ive been told outright lies and im not yet an account holder. i have since then cancelled tiscali.

i am currently looking at other isps and even cable broadband hence the post earlier about telewest.

so who is at fault here? obvisouly tiscalli, for lying, but what about the mac code issue?

also ive been reading once youve got the mac code it will expire in 30 days. so if you dont find a new isp then will wanadoo just cancel your broadband altogether once the mac becomes invalid? the email with the mac mentioned if you want to stay with wanadoo then you simply dont have to do anything until you find a new isp. im staying with them for another month which will last until 16 dec but my mac expires on 9 dec. im afriad they will just cancel my broadband without officially telling me and leave me in an awkward situation.

thanks in advance for any comments.

Don't forget that once you give a MAC code to an ISP, you can't use it a second time, even if you cancel the migration or this happens within the 30 days.

So you will need to ask Wanadoo for a new MAC again if you want to migrate to a second ISP..

I might be jibbing crap here but could it be to do with the fact that Wanadoo are an IPstream provider whereas Tiscali are a predominantly Datastream provider. Given my crash course knowledge on migrations, single user cross-technology migrations are very rarely carried out; so that might be your problem.

I still think it's a little harsh of wanadoo to take a request of a MAC code as notice to terminate your account, sorta defeats the point if anything goes wrong...

they can generate a new code but moving from wanadoo to tiscali is a bit like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

read the complaints on here about tiscali and how some have been released within the 12 month contract due to the slow speeds.

Just to clear up a misconception, once the Mac Key has been issued the losing ISP has nothing more to do with the process. It is all in the hands of the new ISP whom you have given the code to.
I suspect that Tiscali have not entered the code into any systems, ('Wanadoo have not released the line yet') if this is the case and your 30 days is not yet up, I would go to a more 'reputable' ISP and give them the key - see what happens as you have nothing to lose really.

Tiscali really are 'pants' IMHO they look like they are trying to activate you as a new connection

Oh Boy! If you have cancelled Tiscrapi your problems have only just begun . Send recorded Delivery letter by SnailMail. Show bank copy of cancellation letter and recorded delivery slip And tell Bank not to make any payments .Tiscrapi will try taking money from your account for some months afterward.

is tiscali that bad!

i got a cancellation reference from them and my email with them no longer works, so it might be ok.

but if they start taking money from my bank without me knowing im going to take this to the top.

my account wasnt actually activated, would that make a difference?

If you can still connect to Wanadoo via broadband they cannot, and should have not, released the line. That is the whole point of the MAC system.
Your new ISP initiates the Wanadoo release and connection to themselves by use of the MAC (I think that a branch of BT actually performs the switchover).

So, the migration should only take a few hours, instead of being without your broadband link for days (weeks?).

If the MAC expires Wanadoo should not switch you off, as long as you keep paying their fee. Just ask Wanadoo for a new MAC, why should they expire anyway?
You may already know this, but you can only migrate ISP connections at the same speed e.g. if you have 512K you can only migrate to 512K. You may be able to upgrade with your new ISP, for a fee. e.g NAIMS currently charges £10
