MAC - Compulsory release within 5 days

So what happens when you've had enough and want out? Your internet company is supposed to give you what's known as a MAC code. It's supposed to help you to switch seamlessly to a new supplier. But a number of providers seem unwilling to give them out and let you leave. The industry regulator Ofcom has received so many complaints about this it's now made it compulsory for broadband companies to hand over your MAC code within five days of you asking for it, regardless of any ongoing payment disputes. Companies found in breach of new MAC rules can now be fined up to ten per cent of their turnover.

From the posts i've been reading across various boards, some ISPs are still a little fuzzy about the details.

Some ISPs stick to the rules and hand them over on request, but some only hand over MACs when it suits them, others just disconnect the user concerned so they have to wait until their line is clear until they can sign up with another company.

OFCOM will actually have to fine an ISP for the rest of them to take this as seriously as they need to...

Another point i would like to mention is the fact that some ISP's are not counting weekends Sat, Sun. Breathe quoted the none working day's scheme. 5 day's should mean 5 day's. I asked for my Mac code on the 23rd, only got it today 29th. The rules are not clear.

I think you will find it is 5 working days like everything else excluding weekends and bankholidays.

5 working days seems reasonable to me as an upper limit, I seem to recall a fellow forum member waiting more than 5 calendar months to try to get a mac, a cease, or even a service from the incumbent ISP on his line last year.

Hi All

When one takes up employment with any department store / supermarket their contract states they work any 5 of 7 days that includes weekends & bank holidays so this should apply to the issuing of MAC's. As the I.S.provider expects their staff to work on the same rota:nod: It is also time ofcom got serious with these I.S.P'S that drag their feet and those who go in to admin a 2 year ban on setting up another company dealing with providing broadband:o Thankfully we have this forum to help us with what problems we may have? and a Big thank to Mel and Kits for being here to help as well as others:D

You cannot put this inline with department stores for a few reasons.

1, department store sells you a product which may be either perishable or not.
2, department stores select their opening times to maximise the time customers have, I.E if 95 of populaton work 9 till 5 shopes open later to catch the money these people generate and weekends incase they have to travel long distances from work.

3, ISP, BT, water, council/goverment establishments, electricity, gas and banks all sell a service, some staff will only work 9 till 5 monday to friday. Certain staff will cover weeekends for emergency problems only, This means that some things like MAC codes will only be completed between monday to Friday giving a 5 day turn round but incase someone asks for a MAC on a thursday they say 5 working days so they dont include Sat and Sunday and bank holiday.
