Major problem with Newnet Broadband service

I am writing to warn people about a major problem with the above service provider.

I recently migrated from them to Plusnet who offer a far superior package, and was switched yesterday.
However I found that after the switch I could not access my old email account with Newnet, so I phoned them this morning to resolve this issue only to be told that the mail account is linked to the broadband connection and ends when the service does.

If I have been informed of this when I applied for the migration code I could have resolved the problem of accessing all my various accounts and changing the email address before the switch. However Newnet do NOT inform you of this.... they just suspend your email address without warning or notice. :hrmph:

The major problem for me with this is the fact that password criteria is becoming more complex by the day, and they now not only ask for alphanumeric data, but in addition symbols and capital letters, so trying to obtain all the forgotten passwords becomes a nightmare, especially when the password reminder is sent to the email address that can no longer be accessed.

So let this be a word of warning. It may be that you own ISP has a similar policy, so it would be worth contacting them and checking to see. I can confirm that Plusnet do not do this, neither does any of the major ISPs, but it may be that some of the smaller companies do, so I would check and potentially save yourself a lot of trouble.

Not that it's much help now but switch to a web mail based account if possible in future. Can't really remember the last time I used an e-mail account tied to an ISP.

To be fair, this is standard practice. But I do agree that many ISPs should make it clearer both at time of sign-up and at time of cancellation/migration.

But like Bob says, switch to a web-only email service (Like Hotmail or Gmail) and you can avoid this problem in the future. Alternatively, get yourself a domain name (£6-£7 for 2 years for a .co.uk) which can also be used to avoid this problem.

Thanks for the heads-up though. I'm sure this information will come in handy for other Newnet customers out there.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. I did check with my new provider and these is no problem with the email address being terminated.

I agree that the online based webmail services have none of the same problems, but you need to be online in order to access your mailbox. I travel a lot and consequently need to connect my laptop to the internet every time I need to access my emails, and this can prove an expensive and time consuming process.
Also I sometimes wish to use encryption to keep my mails private and this is not possible with a web based service, so I guess for me I have to carry on as I am, but thanx for the advice.

It doesn't matter how often you change ISP, it stays with you

If you can afford it, you can PAY for a personal email address of your choice. My own email address is my name, with".net" on the end of it (for example (Tom@Jones.net). It costs me about £20 per year from Netidentity.com, but is with me for life, so long as I pay the annual charge. It can be operated as POP3, IMAP or Web Mail. It doesn't matter how often you change your Internet Service Provider, it stays with you.

Of the free email suppliers, I can recommend Myway.com, as my 3 daughters use them.
